I haven't used this service, but New York State publishes a list of "Navigator" agencies that help people sign up for health insurance.  You can find a list here: https://info.nystateofhealth.ny.gov/ipanavigatorsitelocations

Good luck!

A new Poké place is opening up on Broadway across from the 74th Street subway station... PokéMOM. In addition to Poké bowls, they'll have sushi, momos, and bubble tea.

I hope they're good!  My favorite Poké mini-chain in Astoria and Flushing, Poké Wave, recently went out of business.

Neighborhood Chat / PLEASE READ: JHL to say goodbye
« on: November 09, 2021, 07:30:03 PM »
Greetings JH Lifers,

We're writing to announce that this website will be closing down on December 31st.

This forum has just passed its 14th birthday.  Our tongue-in-cheek explanation for why the site was founded has always been that the community needed more space to debate the imminent arrival of its first Starbucks.  The first real post on the site was about an upcoming meeting of the Western Jackson Heights Alliance.  Since then, we've traveled together through a lot of civic activism, political flame wars, complaints about everything, excitement about new restaurants, endless announcements about flea markets.  We've also seen some of our active members pass away, including community leaders Betsy Guthrie (ECG), Tom Lowenhaupt (Tom Lowenhaupt), and Jose Peralta (joseperalta).  It has also been a great place for people to reconnect: our longest active thread has been "Any long time Jackson Heights residents out there?"  and we ended up creating an entire sub-board for people who wanted to share memories of days past in the neighborhood.

At this point in time, it feels that there are more options than ever for discussing community issues online, and that the time for a site like this has largely faded.  The activity level on the site is much smaller than it was at its peak, and it's a constant struggle to squash bot accounts and delete spam before it can take over the site.  So rather than abandon it to the weeds for a declining active readership, we've decided it is time to close up shop.

Please use this thread to share your thoughts on JH Life, recommendations for other places for the community to congregate online, or (dare we suggest?) make arrangements to meet up in person!  If there are threads that people found helpful for information gathering, such as contractors, plumbers, we recommend finding those now before the site shuts down.

In celebration of our upcoming retirement, "The Last Word" thread  has been unlocked and awoken from its slumber.

Many thanks to all who have made this site possible.  This has been a labor of love for our administrator merm, and our moderators Shelby2. toddg, Chuckster, and JHMNY.  We are especially grateful to all of you, the participants in this experimental community, for contributing to its success and vitality over the years.  Thank you.

Warm regards,
The Jackson Heights Life Team
merm, Shelby2, toddg, JHMNY

Neighborhood Chat / New Book: Roosevelt Station

Commuting Under the Divine Light
Blind: 28 MAY 2021
by David Campany

In his new book entitled Roosevelt Station, New York photographer David Rothenberg captures his subjects – commuters, airport-bound travelers, panhandlers, missionaries, and others – awash in the radiant, cathedral-like light of Jackson Heights–Roosevelt Avenue/74th Street train station’s concourse. These otherwise candid, rush-hour images assume an otherworldly theatrical guise.

Restaurants & Food / Re: Northern 79th Superfresh Grocery
« on: March 04, 2021, 10:12:49 PM »
This is a little out of the way for me, but I heard some excellent reviews, so I brought my cart up to Northern for a big shopping trip.  I was impressed by their selection and quality for a small grocery store.  This is an excellent additional option in the neighborhood.  Hopefully they'll get enough turnover to keep the perishables fresh and diverse.

That's an excellent idea and a fantastic facebook group.  Well worth checking out.

My family's recent local delivery favorites have lately been Kitchen 79, Mama Rosa's Pizza, Yun's Cafe, K&L Deli, El Toum, Angel, UFC, Happy Kitchen, Dosa Delight, Poke Wave (Astoria), Makina Cafe (Astoria), Joju (Elmurst), and I Love Pho (Elmhurst).   We're always looking for something new, so we'd love to hear what others are eating.

Restaurants & Food / Sweet Lucca

It's always wonderful to see creative new businesses opening.   Today I happened across Sweet Lucca, which specializes in rice pudding, at 83-06 37th Ave.   They're super friendly and were giving out free samples.    They said they also plan to carry hot oatmeal.  Check them out!

This is puzzling.   I thought they wrapped up field data collection in October.

Long Island City's long-awaited food hall is finally opening at The Jacx at Queens Plaza

Eater: A Flashy New Food Hall Brings Some of NYC’s Top Talent to Long Island City.

I'm particularly excited to try Fieldtrip, by a chef I've been following for a while (but alas, not tasting very often).

If you get a chance to check it out, put your reactions here...

My family also tried it for the first time tonight.   Everything was excellent!

I've been dreaming of a Middle Eastern restaurant in JH for a long time, and I'm delighted that Sami has delivered!  I will miss my bagel & whitefish, but I'm happy to make the trade.

dssjh -- you weren't kidding about the babaganouj!   There's enough garlic in there to give it quite a kick.   And the pickles and turnips are just right -- hopefully you'll get them next time.
