The Obligatory JH Starbucks Thread
« on: October 29, 2007, 08:32:08 AM »
By popular demand, we now have a thread dedicated to discussion of the Jackson Heights Starbucks...

Best thing ever to happen to the neighborhood?
A sign of the coming apocalypse?
Never going to happen?

Your opinions and rumors are welcome here!

I just wish it would get here already. And does anyone know when Espresso 77 will open? I'll take whatever coffee I can get.

I'm looking forward to it - I check for progress every time I walk by. . . but unfortunately I'm not seeing any!

And perhaps this should be a different thread, but everyone always talks about how the rents on 37th Ave are prohibitively expensive.  I still don't understand how all those 99 cent stores stay alive.  Do they really sell that many items?  How about that absolutely giant health and beauty items store on 37th between 83rd and 84th that always seems to be empty?  I heard the rent is $17,000 a month.  That's a lot of shampoo.

So back to the point - why is it so hard to attract better businesses to the district when these other stores are managing to stay alive?  At one point when people thought Starbucks was not coming, I heard this tossed around as a potential reason - that they demand lower rent spaces as they tend to be anchor stores for a neighborhood and rents on 37th Ave were too high.

Saw some work going on in the Starbucks space today and the rumors are flying that the 'lease has been signed'. We'll see!

This was posted on the JH parents yahoo group page today.

“Yes it has been confirmed, STARBUCKS COFFEE Company will be opening
on 37 Ave! The neighborhood has been waiting for the arrival of its'
first international retailer to 37th Avenue. We would like to welcome
Starbucks to our office building at 78-27 37th Avenue, The Queensboro
Building! All the rumors have come true according to our landlord News
Realty. They have confirmed that Starbucks has signed a lease in the
hood. I would like to thank all of the owners and staff at News Realty
for their continued efforts toward enriching our community. We are
proud to share an address with STARBUCKS COFFEE. See you here soon!”

So I hope Espresso 77 opens soon to get a nice head start.

I'm excited about it too!!  There's just no decent coffee places.  Sometimes it's nice to treat yourself.   :)
I'm also wondering how all of these stores stay in business.  82nd Street is just ridiculous!  Walking to the 7 Train is like walking through an obstacle course!!  Anyway, I hope the Starbucks comes soon.  Same for Espresso 77.

Oh my GOD!   You mean to say there's a community in the area WITHOUT a Starbucks??

Since I don't live in Jackson Heights anymore I can't really comment on it, I just love this picture  :-)

In order to keep this discussion on its coffee-centric topic, there's now a new thread dedicated to discussion of a bookstore in JH.

I am all for Starbucks coming to the nabe. I am not a coffee expert by any means and I tend to label my java in the following catergories: fresh, old, weak and strong. In my experience Starbucks typically delivers fresh and strong coffee, which is as good a rating I can give. In addition, Starbucks offers a good variety of tasty treats and seasonale beverages.

Stopped by Espresso77 yesterday and the work is proceeding. The owners are friendly and said they are on target for a December opening.
I've got no problem with a Starbucks, but I'd rather support a good local place (which I'm hoping it will be) run by Jackson Heights residents - and two architects at that.

O.K.  So how does everyone remember the names and preps for all the Starbuck's concoctions?  I can honestly say that I've entered a Starbuck's approximately 3 times in my lifetime so far, and on each of those occasions, I've been baffled by the offerings and have ended up just buying a regular coffee.  They should publish an instruction manual to go with their coffee selection.   ???

You can start your Starbucks education right here. Personally I prefer MacDonald's new coffee selections.

Wow!  I wasn't kidding when I said a manual is needed!  ;D  Thanks for the link.

I only order one of two things: a small pumpkin latte or a white chocolate mocha. I say small/medium/large. I feel dumb saying tall/grande/vente. For regular coffee I much prefer Dunkin Donuts.
