Neighborhood Chat / Re: Official DOT plans for 34th Avenue
« on: November 05, 2021, 07:27:16 PM »
Wow, Well-said ChickenringNYC.  I appreciate your insights on this issue, spot on with these remarks!

MY pals who live on 34th Ave are fed up with the noise and inconvenience of Open Streets. His 80 year old parents who live in the neighborhood aren't fond of dragging metal gates back and forth especially with winter weather coming. During the summer there were outdoor concerts on Open Streets, exercise classes, improvised ball games, and the constant dragging back and forth of metal gates, which isn't exactly pleasant for his daughter's bedroom which faces the Avenue. For people who love to throw around the "Randian selfishness" accusals, the narrow-minded and unenlightened self-interest running rampant in this thread is coming directly from the OS crowd. I'm glad YOUR friends love Open Streets, but perhaps living outside one's own little fantasy world is what makes New York New York, for me at least. Talk about solipsism!

You might check out RCN.  We switched from TWC and they aren't a LOT cheaper, but the service is definitely more reliable.

Hi there, I am very happy with a recent renovation we had done by Juan Guillen.  He is very responsible, and the work was excellent.  Fully licensed and insured, etc.  I can't speak highly enough.  Feel free to contact me with any questions.  Juan's contact is: Juan@jgrenovation.com, (646) 498-8643.  Good luck!

Neighborhood Chat / lawyer to draft a living will
« on: June 03, 2013, 12:36:27 PM »
My wife and I would like to find a good lawyer, preferably in Jackson Heights, to help us get some paperwork in order: we want to draft our living wills, power of attorney for each other, etc.  Can anyone suggest someone?  Thanks!

on the south side of 34th ave is the Chateau Co-op.  On the north side is the Towers Co-op.  Both have elevators.

thanks!  I forgot about despana.  They do have some good cheeses and meats, you're right... and at the gourmet deli on 76th st. they have great salmon roe (I like the bigger eggs in the glass jar).  i'll check out monika deli too.

I just want to add that I really like the produce from the Growing Farm, right across from the Met, at 77th and 37th ave.  I find it to be really fresh, and a bargain.  Also, I buy asian foods such as white rice and japanese natto (fermented soybean), and japanese beer, at the chonghap market at 73rd and Broadway.  The other asian market, at Broadway and 75th street, is also good.

While there isn't an amazing one-stop place to get everything, one can find excellent food at great prices in Jackson Heights -- you just have to buy from a mix of different stores.  I still have to go to Zabar's in Manhattan for my torta del casar, epoisses and other cheeses, and also for plugra butter, smoked salmon, and charcuterie.

Can anyone recommend a local place where I can take my kitchen knives for a much-needed sharpening?  Thanks!

Real Estate & Home Improvement / blown-in insulation
« on: November 18, 2008, 01:08:22 PM »
Has anyone had any success with blowing-in insulation into the ceiling cavity?  I've heard about a type of expanding insulation called Icynene.   I want to hear less of my upstairs neighbors, and was curious if anyone could recommend a contractor for this job... or if anyone know about the effectiveness of this solution.  Otherwise, perhaps someone could recommend another solution instead?

Neighborhood Chat / slow express trains
« on: May 12, 2008, 11:24:22 PM »
Hi all,
Has anyone noticed that, as of the last few days, the E or F express trains are extremely slow going to Manhattan between Roosevelt Ave and the next stop (queens plaza or 21st st. queensbridge, respectively)?  I asked a subway conductor today and he said they were under orders to not exceed 10 or 15 mph during this stretch because of track work.  It makes the journey to Manhattan considerably longer!  In fact, I wonder if the local R or V trains are even faster at this point.  The conductor didn't know how long it would last, but perhaps there is someone among us who has some more info....?

here's a topographic map of 11372: http://www.city-data.com/zips/11372.html
scroll down towards the middle/bottom.  It looks like there a plateau on 35th avenue which spans 77-79th streets.. that may be the hightest part, although it's not really a specific point.

This is just a guess, but perhaps the highest point is 35th avenue near 80th street or so?  Does anyone want to correct me?

Shelby2, thanks so much for the info!  I know... it certainly is ironic that I'm soundslover in this case.  you know what they say: the opposite of love is not hate; it is indifference!
