« on: December 27, 2021, 09:45:37 PM »
I was looking for some news on the shooting this evening on 37th Ave and 94th St. (my accountant's ofc is right there). Didn't find anything on google, but yikes:

New Thai restaurant -- Thaan, located on 37th Avenue on the south side, between 84th and 85th. It's next door to Sam's Furniture Outlet, which is going-out-of-business by the end of February.

Be careful traveling to Queens tonight. Another protest against fares, the MTA, and cops is scheduled for 5-p.m.-or-so this evening in Grand Central and other locations.

As an alternative, the Q32 travels through midtown along Madison Avenue and will bring you to the heart of Jackson Heights.

Neighborhood Chat / Sidewalk obstructions by stores and vendors
« on: January 14, 2020, 08:49:46 PM »
I kinda resent that they take up so much sidewalk when the place is really large enough to not have to. Where the tree is, pedestrians have less space than the store.

Neighborhood Chat / Qns teen arrested in ISIS plot
« on: August 30, 2019, 02:09:40 PM »
A little more insight on this case originally posted by petser:

A 19-year-old New York City man has been arrested after telling undercover agents his aspirations to conduct a violent attack in the name of ISIS, senior law enforcement officials said.
The Queens man allegedly exchanged messages with an undercover agent saying how he wanted to commit a knife attack in the borough, according to a source familiar with the investigation. He started trading messages with the undercover agent after claiming in an online chatroom that he wanted to carry out the attack in the name of ISIS, a source told News 4.
The suspect has been identified as Awais Chudhary of East Elmhurst. He allegedly ordered a knife through law enforcement and was arrested as he went to pick up the weapon at the SkyView shopping center in Flushing, a source close to the investigation said. NYPD officers and agents with the FBI, Homeland Security Investigations and other federal agencies in the Joint Terrorism Task Force made the arrest.
Members of the NYPD and FBI were seen going in and out of Chudhary's house on Butler Avenue in Queens Thursday evening. One of the neighbors who lives in the multi-family home told News 4 Chudhary and his family keep to themselves. In fact, the neighbor said she had only seen the suspect twice in two years, saying he rarely goes out.
Chudhary is expected to face a judge Friday, where he will be hit with terror-related charges.
Agents from the FBI and JTTF had been onto to Chudhary since he hatched his plan, and he posed no threat to the public. The whole timeline of the case — from when Chudhary allegedly made the statements in the chatroom until he was arrested — only spanned about five days.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York released a statement, confirming Chudhary had been arrested and saying there was no “public safety issue as a result of the arrest.”

I took the initiative to separate the Amazon thread from the sex trade topic. I think everyone has an opinion on this. We should all feel free to comment on something that could potentially change the look, feel, value, and reputation of Jackson Heights. (There's also drug decrim and new NYS AG and QNS DA to add to the mix.)

abc wrote: "When I lived overseas near a legal red light district, I had to remove used condoms from the flowerbeds outside, pretty much most mornings. That's my past experience of living near a legal red light district. Let's see."

Me: Years ago I would visit Las Vegas on business. I always stayed on the strip and would have a drink-- alone, at the bar. I naively thought it was a good idea, a way to meet people, but quickly learned that I was assumed to be a working girl.

I also remember here in JH there were a lot of sex ad cards literally thrown on the sidewalks; you couldn't avoid them. They were pretty graphic. There was a crackdown and they all but disappeared. I'd hate to see that return to our streets.

What do you think?

What will you do?

Restaurants & Food / tingling fruit (mango)
« on: September 03, 2017, 07:45:52 AM »
I am reaching out to my neighbors hoping someone here knows something about this:

I bought sliced mango at Fruitadona, presumably cut and packaged at the store. It looked overripe but I needed to add to my purchase in order to use a credit card. When I bit into it, I experienced a tingling sensation. I've had this happen to me before when eating sliced fruits; melons, I recall, and maybe strawberries too. I had been told years ago that a preservative added to the fruit causes this sensation. I tried googling it, but came up with just food allergy, which it is not. Does anybody know what the heck I am eating? Maybe someone who's been in the food/restaurant business? There are no ingredients listed on the container.

Is it possibly not an additive but just what happens to tropical fruits as they get old?

Should I throw it out? (In the past I have always thrown it away.)

It's happened to me enough times that I really want to know.

Neighborhood Chat / recommendation for contact lenses
« on: June 20, 2017, 10:45:31 PM »
I don't have vision coverage.

I had been getting my contact lenses from Coco's on 37th Avenue.

It used to be that I could get lenses outside of the one year re-examination requirement. Coco's  current owner/management is adhering to the once-a-year requirement. Does anyone know of an optical store that may be less strict in this regard?

Doesn't have to be local.

Thanks.

Neighborhood Chat / Lost my keys Wednesday 3/10/16
« on: March 10, 2016, 11:01:46 AM »
Hi everybody. I lost some keys on 37th Avenue yesterday, between 4 and 5 o'clock, somewhere in between 89th Street and 76th. It's a long shot, but if anyone finds or hears about found keys, please post here.

Thanks.

Community Groups, Activities & Events / Queens Art Intervention 2015
« on: September 17, 2015, 05:56:51 PM »
Find out more here about one of many interesting things going on this weekend:

http://www.regoparkgreenalliance.org/#!qai-2015/cuxl

JH's Suran Song has a unique exhibit, a mobile meditation and jazz tribute installation. Here's a message from her in part:

Why not come visit me Saturday after dusk in Rego Park, and take supine repose in my yogic truck installation?
Mobile Meditation on The Queens Jazz Trail
will be installed from dusk-10pm at
92-14 63rd Drive, Rego Park, Queens

Why not come and rest in the calm, cushy  truck while gazing up into a mandalic sky of music-video portraits of Queens jazz legends Louis Armstrong, Russell Jaquet, and Lennie Tristano? Their song portraits are: "It's A Wonderful Life", "Suede Jaquet", and "Blue Boy" respectively!

There will be free flower mandala kits and free mobile meditation viewfinder souvenirs for you!

Real Estate & Home Improvement / how much to pay the painter?
« on: April 09, 2015, 09:57:13 PM »
I have a painter coming Saturday. He's priming/painting the bedroom ceiling, walls, and trimming including two windows. The room is about 10 x 16. He's also painting the kitchen, which is just a walk-in and has a window. I'm supplying the paint. The guy is a building worker and is doing this on the side. He's trying to do me a favor and wouldn't quote me a price! How much should I pay him?

Real Estate & Home Improvement / real estate shell game
« on: February 08, 2015, 08:24:10 PM »
This article pretty much sums up why I hate the rich.

http://www.nytimes.com/2015/02/08/nyregion/stream-of-foreign-wealth-flows-to-time-warner-condos.html?src=me&module=ArrowsNav&contentCollection=N.Y.%20%2F%20Region&action=keypress&region=FixedRight&pgtype=article

This, I think, is happening all around us, even in JH, but on a different scale. Surely these immoral activities under the guise of real estate transactions hurts us all and will eventually come back to bite us.

I'd love to hear some comments by our real estate folks, if they would oblige us.

...but dig those crazy mezzotints!
