Restaurants & Food / Re: Lety's Bakery & Cafe
« on: August 02, 2019, 04:58:42 PM »
I hope they don't feel the need to compete with the new guys up the avenue...I've been going to lety's since they opened, and while they don't make world class pastry, it's the quintessential New York bakery, the kind you don't see too much any more. I love the cannolis and we always get kids b-day cakes here. More than anything though, I hope they aren't planning on kicking out the old timers and neighborhood kids who park in their seats. The fact that it's a neighborhood rest-stop is the greatest service they provide, and I know conventional wisdom says that being too lenient in this way is bad business, I'd argue that it's the only reason this pace has sustained itself all these years.

We went there for lunch the other day, really liked the ability to order one rib, one piece of beef, sausage, etc. The menu was all over the place, but the grilled meats were satisfying. My 14 y/o daughter thought the chicken "tastes burnt", but truth is it exceeded my expectations.

Restaurants & Food / Birria Landia
« on: July 01, 2019, 06:59:34 AM »
New taco truck on the corner of Roosevelt and 78th street—
They only serve birria—in the form of tacos, quesadillas, and consommé- it’s called “BEEFRRIA LANDIA”, — they don’t seem to have any presence online.
Instantly and easily this has become my favorite taco in the neighborhood.
The guys who run it are very nice as well, and proud of their food. Anyone else tried it?

Restaurants & Food / Re: Stand Alone Cheese Shop

Really wonderful little shop. these folks are full of knowledge and passion about the product they sell, and contrary to a lot of what is being said here, the farmers that produce a majority of their cheeses treat their animals more ethically than can be said about any of the meat served at every single other grocery store and restaurant in Jackson Heights. I'm not sure why the conversation about this shop has gone in this direction, but not every other spot discussed here. Grass is often what makes cheese taste good, grass means access to pasture. Anyway, back to the topic at hand. This place is a wonderful addition to the neighborhood. Now we just need a fish market and decent butcher shop and we will be all set!

I hope they carry compte. No compte for miles. I found it last in LIC seven years ago.

Every cheese shop and most grocery stores in NYC sell comte, including food town.

Cheese is a dying food market. I predict within 10 years, half the population will look at cheese in disgust as more become educated on the goodness of plant based foods. After all, cheese is made from the milk of cows (usually) whose milk is meant for their newborns... but instead stolen so humans can make dairy products from it. Imagine that! Soon we will have cheese museums and meat museums so future generations can see just how barbaric this generation was.

Totally not for a cheese store in this neighborhood.

Actually, cows didn’t exist until we humans bred them from oxen for their milk, so the argument that their milk is only for baby cows is a bit disingenuous-without milk for human consumption there would not be a baby cow.

Restaurants & Food / Re: Arepa Lady opening!

The reason many restaurants only take cash is that the banks/credit card companies take between 2.5% and 3.5% of each transaction plus, often, a 25¢ swipe fee. If Arepa Lady were to swipe $1,000,000 in transactions in a year, that'd be tens of thousands of dollars going to a bank. I'd rather see that money go to employees. There are also many other reasons a restaurant would choose to be cash only, especially in this political climate.
