Neighborhood Chat / Re: The Last Word!
« on: Yesterday at 10:40:56 AM »
Amen JH Resident. Agreement was not always the goal in my personal postings. The ability to say one's thoughts in an open air, though online, forum was invigorating and something that gave a good deal of insight and pleasure throughout the years. None of the other venues online has even come close to the level of thought provoking discourse that has occasionally happened here over the years. Wishing everyone well in their new exchanges.

And for the record, tweeting and Trump go together in my mind. Let's not go there please! Can Shekar get a new outlet for his non tweety constituents? Town crier style?

Thanks Chickenring. We've been too just that. Hyper vigilant, mask wearing, avoiding congregant setting (except for the needed subway/bus rides) and knock wood, life goes on.
Relatives have spoken of growing up in areas of long term conflict in a similar way. Just putting one foot in front of the other and taking the necessary as best as possible.

I get a lot of "real news" - the local kind, the neighborhood news here. And it seems that Shehkar prefers tweeting which is something a lot of us managed to avoid. Maybe a tweet interpreter would run interference and post on another site so that we could keep informed without the treaded tw...
Opinions are great too if, and only if, they are substantiated and not just pablum spoken again and again in the same tone with the same language. A good debate sharpens the mind and clears the brain. I have heard talk of reinvesting in local newspapers and of someone starting a new one in Brooklyn. Maybe we will have a similar good fortune here in Queens? With hyper local news segments and posting for those not device driven. Dare to dream.

Yeah. We have so many bored tweens here in JH. Some on this board and they'll like it. Meanwhile Heather Cox Richardson on Substack is a thought provoking read. Nice to be outside the traditional machinery of news and commentary which is something I appreciated from this soon to be gone site.

Thanks for making any alternatives to this site. The graphics look kind of light and tweeny. Is that the intended demographic?

It would be a beautiful Christmas present to have all parties involved recognize the plusses and the problematic regarding the 34th Ave Open Streets project.  :)

Am watching the South African story closely and yes, it's almost half from a week ago with new
infections. My group of family and friends are being cautious but not shutting down and hopefully we can ride out this wave. The current news outlets definitely incite panic.

What a difference a couple of weeks made! In a most disturbing way, we have gone into a scary place once again. I am hearing that it is possible that in a couple of weeks this wave may have washed over us and leave. Good riddance.
  Be safe out there everyone!

Thanks Shelby!! Super helpful information. Will really miss this site!

Yes, I have been looking at that data and have been skeptical of its accuracy. It's hard to believe that at any recent time, 99% of this community was vaccinated for anything, much less Covid. However, this is listed as site of government statistics...any place else that feels like a better read  like the suggestion about hospitalizations?

Is there any way to find out how Jackson Heights is doing right now with Covid positives, testing or any other measures? Asking because it seems like our vaxx rate was pretty high along with awareness of Covid spread.

You're missing some excellent retail and dining establishments on Northern Blvd. Just a fact!

ABCD... Let's not hate on Northern Blvd. It's a commercial area that a lot of folks love. Some terrific restaurants, bars and food markets. Hope something different to what we already have moves in there as I think there was too much overlap with existing food shopping for the previous occupants to survive.

Thanks for these suggestions! Both excellent restaurants that I have to be reminded to visit some of the time. We are very lucky here to have even just these three restaurants, never mind the many others with amazing food.

Again not in JH but in Sunnyside. On Roosevelt Ave and 52nd, I believe. Pediatric opticians next
door too.  https://pediatriceyemd.com/
