Neighborhood Chat / Re: car horns at night
« on: June 01, 2017, 04:56:48 AM »
I moved, have lived on 75th Street.  Constant horns at all hours, it was terrible. In my new city people never use the horn, no matter what.  I am just saying that it doesn't have to be that way.  There is a great world outside of nyc.

Neighborhood Chat / Re: PS 212/Ps 69 question
« on: June 09, 2016, 08:39:36 PM »
My children have been in PS 69 since kindergarten.  My daughter is in honors, there are 32 kids in her class.  My son is not in honors, there are 28 kids in his class. Teachers in honors are usually awesome, non- honors teachers are hit or miss.  PS 69 scores are dropping because teachers there are teaching the lessons out of the teacher guides and they are not really teaching the standards.  The male gym teacher really can't stand children.  The administration can be really unhelpful when you desperately want to help your child.  There are some fantastic educators in that building and some duds.  Overall, I am extremely satisfied with my daughter's experience and I am sickened by my son's experience.

Neighborhood Chat / Re: Riding your bike on the street 101

Pedestrians rarely follow the rules here. I have witnessed a person cross on a red walk sign right in front of a police car who had a green light. Drivers.  Totally.  They break tons of rules. Bikers are the worst because most of us are doing our best to keep track of the unruly pedestrians and drivers and Bam! A biker comes whizzing by when you finally have a chance to go.  They don't even say sorry.

In the ten years I have lived here the only police offers I have seen are the ones who set up the parades and that little guy who gives out parking tickets.

I think about 10% of the cyclists I see actually obey the law.

I think some people who live in the Berkeley are still having problems there because a friend of mine went out of his way to post that article on social media, and his family lives there.  That NYT piece made me feel happier about moving.  Having experienced the garden police myself it is disturbing and unnerving to live with a beautiful garden and not be allowed to walk in it with your child.  I wish I was exaggerating, but I assure you, I am not.

Neighborhood Chat / Re: Staying here or moving out?
« on: May 22, 2016, 06:49:19 AM »
We are moving, as middle school and high school approach we have decided too much is left to chance here. After 10 years in Jackson Heights we are moving next month to a state where we can actually afford to buy a house and a better lifestyle.  We will miss our friends, but my best friends have all moved for the same reasons.

Neighborhood Chat / Car alarm
« on: April 09, 2016, 09:07:49 PM »
There has been a car alarm going off intermittently since 4pm. Somewhere near 34th Ave. & 74th St.  Is there any way to make it stop?

Last night the planes were going directly over my roof, for the first time.  We live on the 6th floor.  Noticeable, but totally not annoying.   Give me an upstairs neighbor who runs around all day and night, then I would be complaining 24/7.

A minivan hit 3 cars, multiple people call 911 and no cops arrive, ever? Welcome to Jackson Heights!

I think people drive recklessly because there are no police patrolling to give them consequences.  They get away with it constantly, so they keep doing it.
