Hey Matt,

We worked with Aleks Minos of Sync Construction.
https://syncconstruction.com/

He's done a lot of work in my building, and has a (completely deserved) reputation for being meticulous.

I second this! Aleks gut renovated my kitchen two years ago and he is THE BEST!

I agree with others that piecemeal it's hard to find a contractor to take on a small job. Floors are the exception. You can usually find a floor refinisher on your own. Mine were in terrible shape—pet urine black burns everywhere. Those kinds of burns don't come out 100% but I'm happy with the result. Richard at USA Floors: 646-739-7535

Neighborhood Chat / Re: J & J covid vaccination availability
« on: April 09, 2021, 10:16:12 AM »
does anyone know where one can get this in the neighborhood or at least close by?

I've been volunteering with Vaccine Angels and located J+J for a few who requested it. The nearest big site to us that carries it is The Javits: https://am-i-eligible.covid19vaccine.health.ny.gov/

For other sites, the Vaccine Finder is helpful because it tells you which site has which vax:

https://vaccinefinder.nyc.gov/

The drug stores are a mixed bag. Rite Aid/Duane Reade has Pfizer. CVS has J+J.

CVS's system is a bit wonky. It works best on Phone. It will tell you that all of NY state is booked up, but you can trick it into revealing new openings. The first time you're asked to choose a state, choose a state other than New York that you think will have more vax than people who want it. Choose a date. Now edit the date and when you do that change the location. This time search for an area not a zip code, such as Queens, NY.

Many of the drugstores keep a paper waiting list. I've heard from more than a handful of people who say they walked into a drugstore at the end of the day and got one.

For links to all the "finders," this is a pretty good summary:

We all know about https://www.turbovax.info/, right? It continuously scans all city and state (and I think now pharmacy) sites to show all currently open appointments everywhere on one page. It often mentions which vaccine is given at the site too. If you keep an eye on it, you'll eventually catch when there's a massive opening of appointments. You can then just click to link to the city or state website to make your appointment. It saves you the trouble of having to check multiple sites.

Turbovax retired today: https://twitter.com/turbovax/status/1380511401660325889

Long live Turbovax! I've been volunteering with Vaccine Angels and it helped me get lots of people appointments. The news appears to be we're crossing over from a time of vaccine scarcity to one of trying to locate more people who want a shot. For those looking: Citi Field is taking walk-ins of seniors 75+ AND their home help workers.

The new mobile units will be assisting restaurant workers first:

They are really beautiful inside. You can see that the floors have been refinished, the plaster looks good, the windows all look new. This IS a high price though. I'll be following to see if they get it. If I were looking to move I'd rather get my hands on a crumbly one for a decent price and renovate it to my taste. :-)  But there are lots of folks who don't want to deal with renovations. A backyard and room for a Zoom room or two will be an attraction now.

Suzie.  I have an idea the building you're referring to that stopped allowing dogs many years ago.  Does this building have 145 units built in 1946 and is in the 80's?   If this is the building, I'm hoping that you and others can reverse this decision.

I have an idea of the building you're referring to. There are already (at least) two comfort dogs in this building, so there's a precedent there. There were three but one moved.

I love it when I see one of the Tudors for sale! This one last sold in 2019 for $822k, per the history tab. It's obviously gone through an extensive (and tasteful) renovation.

I wonder what the description means by 2 units, though? Did they turn the 1 family into a 2 family? The photos give no hints at two kitchens or anything like that.

Real Estate & Home Improvement / Re: need hardwood floor refinisher
« on: January 24, 2021, 03:45:31 PM »
We have been hiring Richard at USA Floors: 646-739-7535

He refinished the floors at our previous place while we were living in—and took care of all of the moving around of furniture. For the current place we did it before we moved.

Great job both times.

Can anyone refer me to someone that specializes in hardwood floor refinishing?  My floor are practically new, so don't need repair, but I'm considering changing the stain color.

"We have thousands of appointments currently available," says the New York City health commissioner of vaccine appointments for those eligible.

Thousands!

To our beloved neighborhood restaurant folks, here are the places to get a vaccine, if you're eligible:

It's all inconsiderate. In our co-op we learned that hospital shift workers with facing apartments were trying to sleep in the morning. Garden hours were changed; everyone compromised. But you won't get to a compromise by posting here.

Restaurants & Food / Re: Small business woes
« on: June 17, 2020, 05:46:34 PM »
Please, please someone close off 37th Ave to traffic! It will bring many more customers to the businesses there. We love these places and are trying our best to keep patronizing them in rotation. But if half of the traffic now on 34th was relocated to 37th, we would have a fighting chance of keeping a number of these businesses alive.

They're doing this in some Long Island towns.

Restaurants & Food / Re: Outdoor Dining
« on: June 17, 2020, 05:43:32 PM »
I first noticed this in LIC a few weeks back. It wasn't outdoor dining, but a few bars were serving drinks through windows to people hanging out on the sidewalks. I'm pretty sure you can't do that in ordinary times!

I have mixed feelings though. All of these businesses are being creative and are taking risks in order to survive.

I have started noticing this here too. People are becoming impatient.

I saw this too on Northern Blvd. Several bars were serving drinks. People were milling about on the sidewalk and curb, many not wearing masks and definitely not 6ft apart. It's sad. We have no plans for restaurant dining-even outdoors. We'll see what happens in states that opened before us, but I'm expecting increased cases of the virus.
