Not that Shereen Mahal was amazing or anything, but I will miss the -24hour, catch me at the end of a long night, I need food - place it was.   So, this will be a chain?  Something tells me the new place is not going to catch me at 2am.

Neighborhood Chat / Re: Local gyms, health clubs, exercise spots
« on: August 25, 2009, 03:29:10 PM »
I have never used EFN, but I did take a tour.  I admit, it is in better shape than the Bally's on Queens Blvd.  That place makes me ill.   I am currently a member at Bally's, but only because of a transferred membership that keeps my monthly costs below $20.  I know I'm not going to find anything near that cheap, but I do want something on the lower end that I can get to in the morning and then go back home before work.

Any word about the Gladiator space on Northern?  I am rarely on Northern in the 80s, so haven't seen if it is still vacant.

I wrote to Planet Fitness about our neighborhood and the response is below.  Perhaps if folks who have interest in one of their gyms coming to our neighborhood write to them, we can lure them - like Zipcar.  (http://www.planetfitness.com/contact.asp?s=1287)

We actually have a franchisee who has rights to all five boroughs. I have shared your suggestion with our franchisee.

We do not have any current plans for a gym in this area. However, please stay tuned to the website for updates to our new and upcoming locations as we are growing rapidly and have lots of interest to expand.

Thank you for your email! Please feel free to email me, with any questions, at anytime!

Thanks.  But if he always overcharged you, I'm not sure I want to risk it!

Neighborhood Chat / Watch Repair near Roosevelt station
« on: July 20, 2009, 04:54:47 PM »
There used to be a nice man in the 73rd St. entrance/exit of the subway station that replaced/repaired watches.  He moved and I heard he relocated within the neighborhood.  Does anyone know where he is?  In the alternative, is there anywhere else folks recommend?

Thanks.

I've always liked Urubamba and I'm glad they got such a nice review.

A good site to check if your booze if vegan.
There has been an ongoing debate about Guinness and sadly, it seems that it is still not (but maybe the Stout sold in North America?  ...but probably not)

Pets and Animals / Re: have a veterinarian you'd recommend?
« on: January 04, 2009, 04:01:19 AM »
For an update-

Over the last 3 years, I've taken both of my cats to Heights Veterinary and have been very happy.  Recently, I found both the assistants and the vet very friendly.   They were honest about what older indoor cats really need (vaccines and whatnot) and did not try to sell me unnecessary services or tests as a vet had done when I lived in Kew Gardens.  I did also see an injured cat brought in by a good samaritan and the cat was treated immediately and w/o cost.

Restaurants & Food / Re: Favorite Area Buffet?

Side question:  What are you supposed to do with raita?  It's always served when I order indian food, but since the food is already creamy, I do not know what to do with it.  Mehfil had it at their buffet also.

I love raita.  The best thing to do with it is to dip a piece of your naan or paratha (or other indian bread) in it and eat.  Sometimes if a dish is a bit spicy, a spoonful will temper it.  You can also dip a bit of your bread in it, then pick up a bit from your main dish.  Yum.

Neighborhood Chat / Re: NYT Article Criticizing JH
« on: January 04, 2009, 03:38:56 AM »
As an aside, I hang out in Legends from time to time and doubt its the bar he refers to. Many of the patrons (myself included) are other than white and Texas BBQ in the back is run by a Latina.  I think the bar he's referring to is across the street from Dante's catering hall in the Waldbaum's shopping center.  My partner and I peeked in the window to check the place out (they have decent taps!) but based on the glares we got- kept walking.

Mr Ellick quoted the bar owner as saying “Why did you come to Gandhiland?”   It made me think that bar was close to the 74th St./South Asian business district.  I do hope it wasn't Legends, but wonder still if it may have been ... or perhaps The Ready Penny?  I've not been in there and I haven't been inside the bar near Walbaum's either.  Sad in any case.

(By the way - La Terraza at 40-19 Gleane St., a bit south of Roosevelt has Guinness and Brooklyn on draft and a very arty/queer-friendly space.)

Oh my.

Sure, it might be taken as negative to some, but who are we kidding?  I mean, the bar he encountered that was set on preserving a white stronghold (Legend's perhaps?) or the Korean (Korea only!) nightclub.  As the white folks of JH excluded people of color for so long and to some extent, people of color are sometimes excluding white folks looking for "authentic experiences" in their own enclaves.  Not a shock.  That this jogging white guy would encounter fear and suspicion while taking photographs of folks who may be undocumented...who is really surprised by this but him?

As much as I like to read "positive" articles about JH, I tend to be happier when somebody presents reality - even if it has to be this slightly pretentious white guy who misses his "exotic environments."  Sure beats the hell out of articles about whether JH has finally succumbed to Starbucks or what-have-you.

Interesting that Mr. Ellick decided to move back to Manhattan prior to publishing this article.  So incredibly exotic over there...
