Neighborhood Chat / Re: Blink Fitness
« on: August 05, 2013, 03:41:12 PM »
Even though we asked and received question-mark looks in response, my guess is that we will not be the only ones to ask. The handsome Blink website it out there, and people in our area will surely see it. So whether from us or from others, those Executive employees will find out what’s going on sooner or later...

Believe me, we to are hoping for a great gym in the area! I looked up the Yelp reviews for Blink Fitness in the NYC area, and was delighted to find the majority of them overwhelmingly positive.

•• UPDATE •• UPDATE •• UPDATE ••

Agents D and R reporting.

Currently the Blink site is the 10-year-old Executive Gym. We stopped in around noon today, conversed with the general manager and the clerk at the front desk. They knew nothing about a change of ownership, nothing at all about Blink. Didn’t know what we were talking about.

At the corner of 78th and Roosevelt a person was handing out flyers, advertising a $200/year membership to Executive.

Either:
Blink has jumped the gun by posting their website – or –
The change of ownership is not yet known to the current employees of Executive – or –
Someone, somewhere, doesn’t know what they’re talking about.

End of report.

Via the URL to their website (thank you, Daisy) I sent of an email requesting info on possible opening date.

I am just slack-jawed over this. An actual GYM. In our NABE. Within decent WALKING distance.

HOLY MOZES. I thought this never would happen. Any idea when the place will open?

Neighborhood Chat / Re: 78-23 37th Ave previously NOVO?
« on: August 02, 2013, 05:44:56 PM »
This afternoon the windows of the old Novo place were papered over, and there was obvious reconstruction going on inside. I barged in and conversed with the guys working in there, whom may or may not have been the Arunee owners themselves. But they spoke like proud papas about the fact that the space is, indeed, going to be the newly-moved Arunee – this time with a full bar [same place that Novo had it.]

This is something of a dream come true: the great Arunee cuisine, brought to a great locale on the Ave. Excellent!

Remember when someone out there in cybernerdsville suggested the space was going to be a “gentlemen’s club?”  ;D

Perhaps actually going to be a gentlemen’s club posing as a Russian deli.   :2funny:

Restaurants & Food / Re: What's happened to Mehfil?

I wandered by Mehfil this morning just to see the place for myself. Peering through the windows, I saw a floor polisher prepared for use. A woman standing outside the restaurant, obviously waiting for someone, said, "Oh, it's not closed. They're remodeling, and will be opening again in one week."

There you have it. I would have missed Mehfil greatly. Good people, and wonderful food.

UPDATE

I went back to the shop yet again this afternoon; this time for some artisan bread. Selecting a package that looked interesting, some clues presented themselves.

Chatting with the very affable owner (I assume it is his wife and son who also staff the store), I learned that most of the foreign-looking labels on products there are Turkish. The family’s from Turkey!

He also said this pita bread I bought was fabulous, and that if it got a little stale in a couple of days, 3 minutes in the oven would return it to excellent form.

Hello. We have a Turkish. Market. In. Jackson. Heights.

And — returning to the point of this thread — a great European butter is only the tip of a lovely and welcome culinary iceberg in our nabe!!!!

[dons Culinary Geek cap]

Regular US-made unsalted butter - primarily for baking rather than table use - is 80% milkfat. European, and specifically French, butters are 80% milkfat. Which means that baked goods (hello! croissants!) are going to be richer tasting, flakier, and considerably more pleasing to consume.

The secret is the decreased water content in the butter.

Plugrá is among the best imported butters of this kind. And Lemon Farm carries it!!

I believe Taggie's reference to bar-raising was about other merchants on 37th, not the newly-opened Lemon Farm.

I am really knocked out by Lemon Farm. I returned for another, slower browse-through today, and came away even more impressed with what I take to be the basic premise of the store: boutique-ish, Euro-style, high-end items that aren’t carried by Trade Fair or Met Foods.

First and foremost: Jackson Heights finally has a location where Plugrá European-Style Butter is sold. BAM! Total win!

The dairy goods, breads, pastas (HUGE selection), olive oils, nuts & dried fruits,.. all of a rather elevated quality level for this nabe.

And the produce!! Blazingly high-quality stuff.

And yes, the sweetest brand-new store cat around.  :smitten:

Discovering the garden you've created was a wonderfully jaw-dropping surprise. Man, you have set the bar high for other businesses. It's really lovely. And much appreciated!

Considering Jackson Heights is one of the hottest burgeoning neighborhoods in the five boroughs, I would suggest that if mkn567 – as a lifetime resident of the area – feels this neighborhood is seedy, it's quite possibly due to his or her presence here.

How very revealing to see this person toss LGBT people in the same pot as drug dealers and prostitutes. The description of our neighborhood as given by this terrified bigot is diametrically opposed to my lengthy experience here.

It's very satisfying to hear that you had a good experience at Armando's. I can't imagine anyone reporting otherwise.

That we have a white-linen restaurant at the corner of 37th Ave and 75th St is nothing short of a genuine treasure.

We've been regulars there for years, and have nothing but highest praise for the establishment. The staff is always pleasant and appropriate; they remember our favorite cocktails and wines; they are generous to a fault when accommodating the needs of my elderly father-in-law.

Do not miss their Fettucine Alfredo. It's sumptuous but not deadly. They often offer Osso Buco as a special, served with saffron risotto, and it's incredible. Seafood, pasta, salads,... all of it really wonderful fare.
