I have had good luck with Laurel Blinds on Metropolitan Ave. They have been around forever. http://www.laurelblinds.com/home.html Added bonus, if I remember right they will pick up and deliver. Hope it helps.

Neighborhood Chat / Absentee Ballot Postage
« on: October 06, 2020, 02:30:59 PM »
This past week I had the occasion to assist a family member with a NYC absentee ballot. We put the completed ballot inside the oath envelope, signed and dated the oath envelope and placed it inside the return envelope. So far so good. Then we noticed that postage is required. That’s fine. We are happy to pay the freight. But the question became how much postage? The envelope appeared like it might require extra postage. We put two stamps on it to be certain. But we remain puzzled by this. It wasn’t obvious in the ballot instructions what the postage would be. A quick look at the Board of Elections website didn’t help either. It just seems that for something as important as an absentee ballot it would be crystal clear what the postage was. My doomsday fear is hundreds of ballots being returned to sender for insufficient postage. So does anybody know, what exactly is the postage for a NYC absentee ballot?

Real Estate & Home Improvement / Re: rug cleaning companies

We use Long Island Carpet Cleaners. They are an old and reputable company.  We have had them clean, re-fringe, and do minor repairs to our Persian rugs. They pick up and return the rugs. They aren't cheap, but you pay for what you get and they are trustworthy pros. They also periodically do 2 for 1 specials on rug cleaning.

Neighborhood Chat / Re: Flu vaccine
« on: January 20, 2013, 09:35:59 AM »
I got my kids vaccinated at Walgreens (78th & Northern).  So the pharmacy world can accommodate kids now.  Going to local pharmacy is easier than the the Doctor's office for a lot of parents.  I was glad to have the option.

One thing to note for those considering this option.  Walgreens was only doing it for kids 9 and older.  I'm not sure if they plan on doing younger kids or not.  So if you have a younger child and are considering going to a pharmacy for the flu shot I'd call first.

It is my understanding that one of the main benefits/rationales of Governor Cuomo declaring a Flu Emergency was that pharmacies would be allowed to dispense the flu vaccine to children.  Going to a local pharmacy rather than schlepping off to the pediatrician would make my life easier.

Has gone to a pharmacy and gotten the vaccine for a child?  If you did, which pharmacy did you go to? I haven't found a pharmacy that said they would do it.  Maybe the RiteAids and Walgreens of the world haven't had the time to get it set up for kids yet.

This link [url][/urhttp://www.citylimits.org/news/articles/4608/legal-questions-emerge-about-citi-field-malll] to City Limits was tucked into the Pratt Institute article.  For those interested in deep background on land use issues related to Flushing Meadows Corona Park it is worth a read.  It's very interesting.

I agree with Legend's and Cassidy's.  They would seem to fit the mold of what you are looking for.  Another place you might wish to consider is the Ready Penny on 73rd St between Roosevelt and 37th Ave.  Just a plain ole standard type bar.  They have a cope of pool tables.  I haven't been in there in a very long time so I can't say what the clientele is all about.  But still, it might be worth your while to pop in and have  look.

You might want to try the Ready Penny on 73rd between 37th and Roosevelt.  They definitely will have games on.  Not sure if they have Sunday Ticket.  You could always call and ask.

Restaurants & Food / What is your favorite recipe?
« on: August 15, 2011, 12:12:31 PM »
What is your favorite recipe?

I should clarify a bit.  I don't mean a favorite dish or a favorite meal. Or something that you eat 3 or 4 times a month.  Nor do I mean picking the best recipe for, say for arguments sake, chocolate cake.  Not looking for I like chef A's recipe for chocolate cake more the chef B's.

What I'm getting at is a recipe that you are just pleased with.  A recipe that doesn't disappoint.  A recipe that is balanced and simple.  A recipe that you make for a Tuesday night but you also would gladly serve to company (and the company would love you for it).  A recipe you are always glad you made and know you will make again.

You get the idea.

For me, one of my favorites is Emeril Lagasse's take on Shrimp Fra Diavolo. You can make it in about 15 minutes.  It just never disappoints me and I'm always glad I made it.

Anybody else have a favorite or two?

Neighborhood Chat / Re: Calle Colombia Way??

ECG and Snickers, you are correct in thinking that a street "renaming" is an honorific.  The signs are what DOT refers to as "addional signage".  The actual name of the street does not change.  Not quite sure why google maps shows Kalpana Chawla Way instead of 74th Street.

.... and I love 77 Street between 32/31st Ave. Some of the homes have their original stain glass windows and beautiful stonework.

It's great to see a little attention being giving to blocks north of Northern.  There are some great blocks over there. And the stained glass is pretty cool to see.

There are also some unappreciated blocks in the lower 70s between 35th and Northern.

I like Shelby2, found myself pausing on the paragraph about median sales prices.  I had the exact same thought as Shelby2.  East Elmhurst has more single family houses while Jackson Heights has more co-ops.  Comparing apples and oranges.

That said, on balance I liked the WSJ article.

This is kind of a lighthearted thread.  Many possibilities. When I first came to Jackson Heights a longtime resident said to me the 86th Street between 34 and 35 was the best block in Jackson Heights.  Definitely a case to be made for that block.  I also always thought the Greystones block, 80th between 37th and 35th was impressive.
