Neighborhood Chat / Re: Need some help to open a restaurant/bar in JH
« on: December 30, 2013, 03:29:07 PM »
This is a long shot, but the Rite Aid on 82nd Street between 37th and Roosevelt appears to be in the process of closing. They've moved all their prescriptions over to their enormously enlarged (doubled in size) store on 37th Ave between 82nd and 83rd. It seems likely that they will close the entire 82nd Street store.

This is a huge space, of course.

Restaurants & Food / Re: New Cafe/Restaurant on 37th Ave.

It's called Just Made 4U and it's opening today (Tuesday). My roommate and I stopped to watch the setup activity yesterday afternoon, and a small boy rushed out with a smile and a sample menu. It describes salads, wraps, light entrees (chicken, shrimp, salmon), burgers, crepes, arepas, and sides and features a "build your own" approach with lots of toppings.  Breakfast too. Their theme is "a healthy meal." It looks pretty good; we'll be giving them a try soon.

They're at 80-21 37th Ave, between 80th and 81st. They deliver too.

Neighborhood Chat / Jackson Heights Vision Center

My roommate and I will be buying new glasses soon and are thinking of trying the Jackson Heights Vision Center at 83-25 37th Ave. Has anyone had any experiences with them? Good quality lenses, good fit? Thanks for any help with this.

Okay, I'm good with that. They were cheerful and well lit and, especially relevant now that the Hallmark is gone, they often had interesting greeting cards.

Neighborhood Chat / Construction Project at 82nd & Roosevelt
« on: May 07, 2011, 03:38:03 PM »
Does anyone know who has pulled down several stores near the corner of 82nd street and Roosevelt to combine them into a single unit? This is the former news vendor/Carvel/Radio Shack bloc, with the New York Language Institute above it.

The construction project has been going on for months, with no clue as to who's coming in, and I'm itching with curiosity. The news vendor, who is now across the street, says that Duane Reade is returning, but that space doesn't look large enough for them--I don't think. Anyone hear any rumors?

Restaurants & Food / Re: Sal's pizza
« on: May 07, 2011, 02:44:35 PM »
Yes, on my way home from work on Monday night, I heard a lot of banging as I approached Sal's and was shocked to see workmen pulling the counter (could have even been the oven) out of the almost empty store, and to see the For Rent sign in the window. All  of a sudden he was just gone; it was awful!

What a shame. He had the best eggplant pizza! And an excellent salad that he called Antipasto Tropilo. I really hope he finds somewhere else in the neighborhood to open. These small restaurants make the neighborhood what it is; it's terrible that they can't make it.

There will be another community shred on Sunday May 15, 2011, between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.  City Council Daniel Dromm is bringing back his big shredder truck to the corner of 37th Avenue & 77th Street, in front of the Jewish Center.  Contact info: (718) 803-6373.

Anyone who has taken advantage of this opportunity before knows that it's a great way to rid yourself of thousands of personal papers with personal info on them, like old bank statements or medical/insurance papers, safely in this age of identity theft.

Please note that City Council Member Danny Dromm will be arriving with his great paper-shredding machine in front of the Jackson Heights Post Office next Saturday, May 22nd, at 10:00 a.m.--rather than 9:30 as was previously announced--and the free service will continue until 1 p.m.
