Sometimes I find the produce at the greenmarket is cheaper than the supermarket.  Like last weekend, for example, I found that green peppers at the greenmarket were about $.50 cheaper than at Waldbaums.  Herbs are always more for your money, and it's not like you have to spend an arm and a leg at the greenmarket either.  I don't hear many children asking for squash blossoms.  And if I were using foodstamps, you bet I would buy organic or local foods instead of the stuff from the supermarket.  Why should my family have to eat food exposed to a variety of pesticides and growth hormones when I can purchase an alternative?  I'm glad that the greenmarket accepts foodstamps.  Everyone should be able to buy healthy, fresh, local food for their families.

About the foodstamps- I think they are "extra" food stamps in addition to what they already get.

You have to go to the market early to avoid the stampede, I am totally overwhelmed by all of the people shopping, it's just too crowded. When I go very early it's not so bad and there are more choices.

That would make a lot of sense!  If I got extra food stamps just to use for the Greenmarket, I would totally go there every chance I got.  That's a great extension of the program.   Speaking of crowds, yesterday was the first time I went there to buy stuff.  It was an eye-opening experience.  I got there at 10, which I thought was early enough, and it was just too crowded- everyone was competing for a space to select produce with lots of jostling and elbows- one guy saw me going through the potatoes and told me I was too picky.  When I gave him some space to get his own, he quickly grabbed a bunch and loudly declared "Done" in my direction.  That was uncalled for.  And then once I was ready to pay, I had to wait in some semblance of a line, 10 people long, until the Greenmarket staff were ready to ring me up.  It was pretty stressful and just not worth it for me, unless....they start selling pumpkin pie- does anyone know if they'll be selling that later in the month?  I only saw fruit pies.

the website said 'early june' when i checked a few weeks back. hoping that means next week. also found, since i happened to be at an appointment near there, that the awesome fish purveyor spends his saturdays at the little greenmarket across from lincoln center.

The JH Greenmarket will return on next Sunday, June 7, 2009!

According to a message I received from Friends of Travers Park, there will be two new farmers participating this year: a poultry farmer and a new fruit/veggie farmer.

But as in years past, don't expect everybody to show up the first couple of weeks.  It's still early in the season yet for some of the farmers and the market doesn't usually hit its full swing until July.

Isn't Corona getting a greenmarket as well? I think its at the Junction stop, where the plaza is wide. They've also insttalled a public restroom similar to the one at 34th st in Manhattan.

Anyone know when the farmers market is reopening? I saw that last year was around June, is it the same this year? Also, is this open to the public or do I have to sign-up somewhere? Thanks in advance!

If you walk by the park, the parking signs used to have the date range posted (since it's NO PARKING on Sunday during that period).

looks like the same lineup from last year, which is fine with me....great vendors one and all.

the clothing recycler was there last year as well. sweet guys, and they gave me a chance to close my escape route by donating all my so-called 'fat clothes' so that i have extra incentive not to gain weight

Why open so late? I'm ready for a greenmarket now. I'm spoiled working by Union Square.
