Escape from Jackson Heights
« on: June 01, 2008, 09:07:06 PM »
I have spent my whole life in Queens and love it, especially Jackson Heights.  Where do you go when you need an escape from the hustle and bustle for some tranquility.  My favorite things to do outside of JH are:

Taking a ride on a Sunday to some of the nice Long Island North Shore towns like Port Washington, Northport, Huntington Village to have lunch and stroll on their main streets.

For a quick relaxing getaway I like walking by the water in Astoria Park or by  Little Neck Bay along the Cross Island Parkway.

But my absolute favorite is going to my weekend home in the Vernon/Hardyston area in  Northwest NJ.  It is only 75 minutes from from JH and you are in the country.  Here I have parking, two decks, and a condo I could only dream about affording in Queens.  I go almost every weekend and I love going there and I love coming back to JH.

My favorite place to visit is New Hope, PA - Lambertville, NJ.   Day trip or weekends there are great.

In the summer, I love to drive out to Jones Beach for lunch.  I sit by the water's edge with a book and my lunch and recharge. I spend about three hours so I get there and leave in between all the morning and evening traffic.  LOVE IT.

I love doing both of these things too.  I go for a day trip to New Hope/Lambertsville every two or three years.  The last time I went I found an antique shop that had the same exact end table that was part of my mothers furniture.  I was going to toss it but saw it was for sale for $799. Never will I throw out anything old before finding out its value.

I also like going to Jones Beach and hour or two before sunset and also when you get an unseasonably warm day in the Fall/Winter.  Two or three years ago I was there on New Years Day and it the temperature was in the 60's

I like this thread!

Hubby and I like going to Saratoga Springs during the summer months.  They have some beautiful Victorian homes up there.  We usually tour the town, grab some lunch at one of the many sidewalk cafes and also enjoy a day at the races.  I've even won on occasion!

I go hiking/camping in Harriman State Park, NY. You can get there by taking NJ Transit from Penn Station to Tuxedo, but I also like to drive there on the Palisades Parkway.

You better believe it's an escape from everywhere especially if you live in one of the houses with back yards.  My friends' (see the mast head photo for the corner of their house) have a gorgeous back yard.  When you're in it, you don't even feel like you're in the city.  A little bit of heaven right here in JHs.     :)

Back in 2004 in one of the worst Hurricane Seasons in Florida I bought a pre-construction condo in Fort Lauderdale.  I finally closed on it February 2007.  So now every month and a half I fly down for a long weekend.  Sometimes 4 days, sometimes 6 days.  Since I have clothing down there, I just get on the plane with my shoulder bag and that's it.

It is great to get away from the city for a few days every once in a while.

Buddy, maybe Eastern Long Island and places like the Hamptons, Montauk, etc.?  And, while on the subject of Long Island, has anyone ever visited Sagamore Hill (Teddy Roosevelt's house) in Oyster Bay?  The grounds are very pretty and peaceful.  Makes for a nice and educational day trip.
