Much ado made about nothing imho - the building is really not that bad and you can hardly see the name even if it's odd.  I do think the distaste is slightly xenophobic as well, would anyone care if they named it the John Caldwell building or something similarly random only WASPY?  That is the one thing we do have over other neighborhoods - I mean look at Astoria. Without JH's benefit of having historic designation and dedicated old-timers who want to make a fuss, my poor old hood is positively bursting with chrome-fenced, pink-bricked, ionic columned multi-family abominations.

Walked by the new apartment building where the fire was at 84th and 37th and saw the name Vin Chu Tower etched in above the door.
Couldn't help to think why they would name a building this--who is Vin Chu??  The developer?

Not to be offensive, but how many people would want to live in a building named Vin Chu Tower.  Part of the charm in JH is the names of the buildings--The Chateau, Belvedere, Greystones, etc.  Not sure who they are marketing to--maybe hoping to attract investors from China.  Also, it is 6 floors, but not really a Tower. Next, can't wait to see the retail that moves in.

The building owner is Mr. Hu.  I believe the name etched into the building is supposed to be Yin C. Hu, perhaps his wife, mother or grandmother.  They didn't do a good job with the name.

Shouldn't be named after a person, full stop. It's tacky.

My sense is that there's going to be a lot of investment from money coming out of China in JH. Maybe I'm wrong, it's a hunch.

So I ran "Yin C Hu Tower" through the internet anagram server (http://www.wordsmith.org/anagram/anagram.cgi?anagram=YIN+C+HU+TOWER&t=1000&a=n), and my personal favorite result (especially given all the histrionics regarding the site) was:

"Outcry Whine"  :D

Not sure if it is named after the Westchester neurosurgeon Yin C Hu, but maybe Ma Yin Chu who Wikipedia says is the father of China's "One Child Policy."   http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ma_Yinchu

I think it is normal for people to wonder and be concerned about a new development in their neighborhood. and I don't think anyone has been overly dramatic, racist or otherwise. I think people are curious and concerned because this is potentially a major development on 37th Avenue.

I did bring up the issue of Chinese investment because a real estate friend told me that a lot of people are investing in apartments with money from China, and they are paying cash. A pure practical fact that impacts home prices and other issues relating to life in JH.

Naming a building after a dead statesman is one thing, but I agree this is tacky--maybe he's the Chinese Donald Trump...
