Recently joined the Recreation Center and swimming pool in Flushing Meadow. $75 per year. Facility is spotless and brand new to boot, but crowded during peak hours. Raquetball court, basketball courts, indoor track and a huge pool.

C11106 I am motivated and I'll make sure to bring those wipes and some cleaning solutions with me as well.  Who knows, I might end up getting a better work out by cleaning the joint.  You think?  Again, I have to loose 100 lbs.  I need to be close to a gym (any gym) and EFN works.  I don't pay attention to much other than myself and my breathing.  The gym is two blocks away, open 24/7, no water fountain, but water can be purchased, and the membership is cheap.  I don't have to take the car, train, or bus, and I can get home quickly and move on to other things.  I don't have to fuss for hours about hair, and makeup and the outfit, so I'm good.  I missed the guy spitting, but again I'm too busy.  Air conditioning is really not that important for me as I need to sweat.  But I gotta tell you, as a former member of the 92nd Street Y in the city, I do need the steam room, or a sauna, so the fact that EFN has no a/c works just fine for now.  And truthfully speaking, when you want to get a work out, you can get one anywhere if you are focused.  That seems to be where I am right now.  Also, I spoke with the owner today and I'll have an update soon.  :smiley6600:

Anyone been to the new Planet Fitness in Astoria?
http://www.planetfitness.com/locations.asp?s=1287

I see on their website they have a $10/month special with no contract....seems almost too cheap to pass up - any problems or nightmares with this place?

JHL's sister site, Astorians.com, has at least one thread on Planet Fitness.

Here's one recent review http://www.astorians.com/community/index.php?topic=12523.msg164660#msg164660

I've been to other planet fitness locations, and the gym was clean, with lots of nice new equipment.  As for staff, just a few high school/college kids sitting behind the front desk.  Planet Fitness is the "judgment-free zone" where they try to eliminate meathead-like behavior.  They do not have very heavy weights and have a rule against grunting. (seriously, check out the website).  I felt that the one I used to go to had a lot of useless people standing around socializing instead of really working out.  I guess they were brought in by the low price and the "judgment-free" motto.

Overall, though, I would recommend PF, as it's very hard to find the cleanliness/low price combination around here.  Only thing is that there is no parking lot and I think street parking would be a nightmare around there.  You could take the R or V train to the Steinway St. stop, though.

Marlene - If you're looking to lose 100 lbs I would highly recommend working with a nutritionist. We have friends who were able to shed that kind of weight and keep it off. Regular exercise is important for health and extending your life, but it just can't produce the kind of results without a change in diet.

Oh, and for the sauna, you might check out the Emerald Spa over in Astoria. Good luck.

Gherm, I'm looking for a local nutritionist.  Any recommendations?  I'll get to Emerald.  Nothing like a day of beauty.  Thank you!  :smiley6600:

I am with Gherm.  I also just joined the rec center over in flushing meadow park...

I just went for the $50 annual membership without the pool.  It can get crowded even in the late morning but you can't beat the price...
Well, I try my best
To be just like I am
But everybody wants you
To be just like them

I rather be

Than livin' as a
Puppet or a slave

I wrote to Planet Fitness about our neighborhood and the response is below.  Perhaps if folks who have interest in one of their gyms coming to our neighborhood write to them, we can lure them - like Zipcar.  (http://www.planetfitness.com/contact.asp?s=1287)

We actually have a franchisee who has rights to all five boroughs. I have shared your suggestion with our franchisee.

We do not have any current plans for a gym in this area. However, please stay tuned to the website for updates to our new and upcoming locations as we are growing rapidly and have lots of interest to expand.

Thank you for your email! Please feel free to email me, with any questions, at anytime!

I think EFN on Roosevelt is a scam. They charge a low yearly rate, and far too many more people have signed up than can actually fit inside. So you go a couple of times, realize it's swelteringly hot, and that there's no room to move around, and all the machines are taken (if they're working at all). Since you only paid a couple hundred bucks, you don't feel so bad about not going. And voila--EFN gets a few hundred dollars and you never use their facility. It's really perfect, actually.

Lol, that's Planet Fitness's game, too.. but you have to realize that there are many, many lazy people that make new years' resolutions, pay for a gym membership, and then are never seen again after February.  This is how most gyms make their money, not as much on the people that actually show up.  I've never been to EFN, but I know with any gym I've been to, your description above applies just after new years, but it's not so bad the rest of the year.

True, true. But I think it's EFN's whole business plan. It's not just the usual post-New Years crowd--this place is unusable all the time. Plus you can't cancel your membership when you realize you've been scammed.

ah, it is what it is. I use it during the early afternoon and have for years. Sure, it's not ideal or all that hygienic, but if you really want to use it, and have some flexibility in your schedule, it does the job.

I have never used EFN, but I did take a tour.  I admit, it is in better shape than the Bally's on Queens Blvd.  That place makes me ill.   I am currently a member at Bally's, but only because of a transferred membership that keeps my monthly costs below $20.  I know I'm not going to find anything near that cheap, but I do want something on the lower end that I can get to in the morning and then go back home before work.

Any word about the Gladiator space on Northern?  I am rarely on Northern in the 80s, so haven't seen if it is still vacant.

I really wanted EFN to be good, but the place is so dirty and unappealing. What a shame , when you are the only game in town. Big 6 is good, no rip off initiation fees, 199.00 per year.
A tiny but clean place just opened at the Tae kwon Do place on Norhern and 69th.
