Outdoor Dining
« on: March 07, 2008, 11:49:43 AM »
Does anybody know of any reason why there is not a single restaurant that offers outdoor seating?  Our sidewalks are not incredibly wide, so there's not room for tons of tables, but this doesn't stop restaurants in many other New York neighborhoods.

A place to sit outside on a warm day having a nice salad and a Bloody Mary would be heaven.  It shouldn't be too much to ask!  I hate that I have to go all the way into Manhattan (or down to Brooklyn).  I'd rather spend my money right here in Jackson Heights.

There are places with outdoor seating -- they're just in back of the restaurants instead of on the sidewalk. I'm pretty sure Pio Pio has an outdoor area and, nearby, Sriphaiphai does, too. I know there are others...can anybody add to the list?

Good point about Srip, jennsch.  I always forget that one.  (I think because in my mind, I'd rather sit on the sidewalk somewhere in the 70s.)  I didn't know about Pio Pio, but I'll have to check that one out when it warms up.  Thanks!

Maybe tote a beach chair along for your next visit to Espresso77?

I think I'd have to bring my own Bloody Mary, too. ;)

I heard that Mystic Planet at 84-07 Northern Blvd has a nice garden in the back.  The place looks a little dark and oddly decorated from the front, but the one time I went there (during the fall- too cold for the garden), I found it to be fine.  The panini I had was definitely acceptable, though it's probably not ever going to be a foodie destination given what else is available in the neighborhood.  If they do indeed have a nice garden, it could be a prime spot for warm weather drinks.

It seems that there eventhough the sidewalks are wide, a permit is required for anything that is placed on a sidewalk, especially tables and chairs.

This also requires a review process through the local community board, and the dept of consumer affairs

Be it enclosed (i.e. Armondos) or un-enclosed, a permit is needed

And while it has been said that sidewalks are wide in JH, they are actually narrow when u look at population density in the area.

The city has issued a more flexible policy recently on sidewalk seating for restaurants.  I've heard that CB3 has been the real obstacle to getting them approved for this area.  Does anybody know if there is any truth to this?

Novo had sidewalk seating last summer. It wasn't very nice because the sidewalks were so narrow. Benches in front of Espresso77, Starbucks and Yogurberry would be great, though.
Better signage at restaurants that indicate when Patio and Terrace seating is open and available would also be a good idea.

I was surprised to see tables on sidewalk in front of Novo today...Only two tables behind a cheesy red velvet rope...but at least a start.  Are sidewalk cafes along 37th Avenue next for JH??

I noticed that tonight too.  I'd love to have some outdoor dining.  There are restaurants here and near by where you can eat outside, but mostly in the back which I prefer.  Farther away from traffic and fumes.

Buddy, what other restaurants have outdoor seating nearby (within walking distance)? I only know of some restaurants on Nothern that open their windows fully to the street, but nothing that I've heard of with outdoor seating space.

We go to Forest Hills or Astoria for outdoor dining in good weather. It would be nice not have to travel so far.

My favorite backyard dining is Sripraphai Thai in Woodside.  So pretty when the weather gets warmer.

Over in Sunnyside on Skillman is Quaint:  www.quaintnyc.com

Harry's at Water Taxi Beach in Long Island City: http://www.watertaxibeach.com/

The most well known place is in Astoria - Bohemian Beer Garden (service is slow)

There are a few more but I can't vouch for them like right in the nabe: Tierras Colombianas on Roosevelt.  And there's Jardi on Northern bet 86/87 but I didn't like it.  Live music so loud you can't talk or hear. Plus I didn't think their tapas were great.  But I could have gone on an off night.

PS here's a link from yelp that has more outdoor places, mostly in Astoria.  I haven't been to most of them so if you go, let us know what u think.  :)

Pio Pio on Northern has outdoor seating in the back, with a fountain. Tables for large groups and couples.
