Man on 84th and 37th ave
« on: July 29, 2012, 11:05:42 PM »
There is an older man who sits under the scaffold at the construction site every weekday morning. The problem with this is that not only is panhandling, but he always is drinking beer and leaves the area he lounges in a filthy mess. Not only do I dislike the mess and having a man drunk by 9am on our streets, but I fear what type of danger he might pose to our community.  :-\

I don't think he poses a danger but I agree with you about the mess. He's been hanging out there since that building burned down, and he just turns it into a freaking dumpster. As if our neighborhood needs any more trash... Not sure there's anything to be done, though, frankly. There is no good system in place to address problems of homelessness in the long-term.

There is also a couple that hangs out at the 82nd and Northern Blvd Q33 bus shelter. I don't think I ever seen them sober. They are always slumped over, bright red and swollen. I'm surprised the fire house does not do anything about this since it is literally in their backyard.

there's not much they can do, actually. if they're posing a danger -- to themselves or others -- by some visible actions, they can be arrested. if they're simply drunk, inert, unwashed and unwell, they're not committing any actionable offenses. i know the couple you're talking about: she's actually very nice when lucid. him, i could do without.

From what I know (or heard) about the couple is that the woman owns a apt nearby but stays in the streets because she is an alcoholic. Her daughter has tried to help her numerous times. She recently was clean for a while but went back on the streets. A few years back she lived in the park and by 7-11. The other day she pulled her pants down and relieved herself right outside of El Coyote. It is a sad situation.

In terms of the couple on Northern Blvd., I have known Kevin for about 7 years, he is harmless and actually a very interesting guy to talk to, very well read as well, a fan of James Patterson, he is an alcoholic, and has been permanently disabled for a long time, having been an elevator operator.  He is never dirty, rowdy, or anything along those lines. His girlfriend on the other hand is quite a rude character, I think he is with her for the company.  They have an apartment somewhere around the fire house, I know he had a co-op in southridge years back before he fell on bad times. In terms them not being dealt with by the FDNY, Kevin is known by almost every NYPD officer, FDNY firefighter, MTA Bus Driver on the Q33 route, etc.  He is no danger to anyone, but his girlfriend could go off the handle.

In terms of the bearded man referred to in the original thread, he is dirty, drunk , and a total mess,  from what I hear he is a military and NYPD veteran with quite a bit of money which he has squandered on alcohol.  The smell under that scaffold is horrible from all of the urine.

very sad story. i've known people, now mostly in my distant past, who've fallen on hard times this way, and some fell off the radar completely. it's heartening to see people tell the backstory and remind everyone that these are real people with real lives. thanks for doing that.

What, specifically, are you suggesting people do!
