New Self Image Fitness Center

Does anyone take classes at New Self Image and can post a review?  It's on 37-40 75th Street.  It looks like its the closest thing to a gym in the area and I just wanted to make sure it wasn't some sort of gimmick.  It kind of gives off that vibe from the outside, but it's in a basement, so you can't really tell.  I will not take pills to lose weight, so I hope it's not like that.  I'll likely check it out this week, but was hoping for some reviews from people who've been through their programs or taken their classes.

I've been doing kickboxing at I Love Kickboxing but classes are only at 6 and 8pm, making it inconvenient when you have evening plans.  This place does appear to have daytime classes so it looks more promising.....

Anyway, thanks for whatever info you can pass on!

Where is "I Love Kickboxing"? I have been using Google Maps to look for gyms in Jackson Heights, and that one didn't come up yet.

The NSI website makes it look like it is aimed towards women (mostly aerobics classes). Please correct me if I am wrong. A full report would be great.

It seems like a recent trend in fitness is gyms where it's based around personal training... every session is done with a trainer coaching you. I guess that's nice but it would be prohibitively expensive for me. Just a quick look at the website makes me wonder if they only offer classes and personal training.

I love Kickboxing is not really a gym, which is why it won't show up on Google maps for gyms - I don't think New Self Image will either.  They're places to take classes and for personal training.  Jackson Heights doesn't seem to have much at all in the way of gyms, nor any outdoor tracks to run in, so places where you take classes like this seem to be the only option for fitness.  Honestly, it's been incredibly frustrating for me.   I would love to have a normal, clean, decent, regular gym around here where I can go at my convenience, but they don't exist.  So I'm desperately trying to find what will work, even though it's more expensive to be forced to work out this way.  And I know if I have to get on a subway just to work out, it won't happen.  I'd walk 20 minutes if I could find something decent.  So far I've found:

New Self Image: zumba and TRX classes, plus nutrition and personal training sessions.  Will try it this week and report back.
I Love Kickboxing:  http://www.ilovekickboxingjacksonheights.com/  85 and Roosevelt:  great kickboxing classes but gets very crowded, class times tend to be inconvenient if you have plans at night, no day classes
MiMi's Yoga - haven't had great luck with finding pilates instructors I like there (the one I did like, left)
Dance Studio 43: zumba on Saturdays - I really like this class but it's only one day a week

Others ???  I've also heard there is a gym called UFC or something but I've heard staff are rude, it's small, and it's one of those you get what you pay for type places.  Still, I may check it out just to see for myself, if they have a 2wk pass or something.  edit- Just saw your review on it here: http://www.jacksonheightslife.com/community/index.php?topic=83.135, I'll check it out anyway but I have a feeling I won't love it based on the description.  And the other one - Executive Fitness sounds worse.

If any potential entrepreneurs are reading this - a real nice gym would be a great business venture here  :D

I was just looking up Zumba classes in the area and New Self Image popped up in the listings.  They have about 6 different postings under slightly different names that cover about 10 classes throughout the week.  I can't figure out why they have differing business names which is odd to me.  I'll likely try a class next week and post some feedback then.  It's a shame that their website is so vague.  Here's a link to the site with the Zumba classes

Thanks!  I think they are listed differently because the instructors themselves input the places they teach zumba.  Zumba instructors seem to jump around from studio to studio, and they have followers, who check that site to see where they'll be teaching.  I stopped by NSI the other day and got a schedule.  They indeed do have lots of zumba instructors.  I'll take a class and report back as well.

Executive Fitness does have a large, clean-looking (I thought so, at a quick glance) aerobics room. I'm more interested in the machines and weights, so I didn't really investigate the aerobics part of the gym. You might want to stop in there and take a look. (I like to see what other gyms offer, even if I don't sign up. Just curious, I guess). For free weights, Executive Fitness is not great, but if you are close by you can probably make it work. Like you said, convenience is everything... if you have to take the subway just to work out... ugh. If Executive Fitness is nearby, you might want to stop in there, and see for yourself.

Thanks K2000, I'll check that out then.  I went to a class at NSI on Sunday and I did enjoy it.  I will say though, that the owner was very late in opening the store due to the time change and they (a bunch of instructors and owner)  spent about a half hour or more talking about the zumba biz - shop talk and gossip if you will.  All I wanted to do was take a class and the shop talk was a bit much to listen through.  The owner's also a bit of a salesman with the long speeches and I don't really have the money to be doing a whole nutrition program.  I'm going to try a few week zumba classes to see if it's any better than on a lazy Sunday, but I'll try out Exec Fitness as well.
