Robert Sietsema of the Village Voice has followed up with a long (and very complimentary) review of Mustang Thakali Kitchen.

"Jump on your yak now, baby, and ride, in Jackson Heights"

A new snack shop has opened at the old location of Himalaya Fast Food (74-10 37th Rd.).... sorry, the name escapes me at the moment!  They offer chicken, beef, and goat momos.  I had the chicken ones tonight and they were yummy, but not all that different from the other shops nearby.

Himalayan Yak prepares real yak meat for a club of adventurous eaters.  Apparently, it helps when you bring your own yak meat.

From Serious Eats:

Himalayan Yak in Jackson Heights Finally Serves Yak

And for those hoping to try some yak...a quote from the same blog entry:

"Those willing to make the, ahem, trek to Jackson Heights will be pleased to know that Himalayan Yak plans to start serving yak meat in a week or so."

This new one is called Bhim Cafe. It's 2 floors like the other one. with basically the same layout. I haven't been here yet, but I hope they stay open longer than HFF.

And what's up with that new place near the east end of 37th rd. It is tibetan, but they say Chinese takeout on the awning. It's a new awning, so don't give me no grandfather clause.

Lali Guras is the name. very funny, cute little place. breakfast specials for AM consumption -- american style -- but really good nepali stuff later on. have had some excellent chicken momos (not tried the beef and i don't believe they make veggie). did have a vegetarian thali, however, reminiscent of mustang. thali was not bad, but i'll go back for the momo, which i'd rank with bhim's.

The New York Times has a brief sit down with Jamyang Gurung, manager at the Himalayan Yak, as part of its Entry Level feature.

tsering looks like a very interesting place....
Now what I call interesting may differ from others, but its this thin shop that serves pretty much just momos, cup of soup and some drinks. The menu was written a large piece of cardboard paper. since the restaurant is on a downward slant, there are 3 or 4 picnic tables each at a different height.

decor i think is uber cool and I am interested in trying the momos. I like this momofication.

Since we are talking about momo, what happened to the Shangri La cart?  My parents were visiting last week and we decided to have a vending cart lunch of Sammy's and some momo (is the plural momo or momos?).  The cart wasn't there but there is an awning at a storefront on 37th rd (next to the new Bhim cafe) that says Shangri La.  I decided to stop in and try Bhim (got chicken for the first time).  It was ok, nothing too great.  Probably because they use cilantro and I despise it.  My parents liked them.

Offtopic for this thread, but we had Nanking one night and it was really bad.  I was surprised because it's usually pretty good.  We had mediocre food for their entire visit - except the Delhi Heights buffet was good and the best meal we had was La Portena.

I had momos from the cart about a week ago...still there then. I don't think the guy's out every night.

I've been checking regularly and the momo cart (shangri-la) is gone. I've tried a lot of other momo places in the neighborhood and I've been underwhelmed.  So many places use meat that is way too gristly for my taste (or they use the evil weed, cilantro).

Does anyone know if they opened up an actual restaurant on 37th Rd (about a block from the subway entrance and Eagle theater)?  The awning says Shangri-la.  thx

I thought the place before bhim cafe had excellent momos, but that's gone.
went to tsering today. very cute place. pretty good momos. though not sure how they will fare with momos as the headliners. If they were open very late, they might be able to do a big business then....

Now, Elm's cafe caddy-corner from pacific supermarket... they advertise their dumplings as momo's. They are the best ive ever had. add sriracha for Zzing!
