At this rate, we'll soon have more Northern Subcontinent eateries than Southern Subcontinent eateries!

• I can’t believe Khan Baba/Pakora changed their name again!
• Top of the World Buffet in Woodside has momos and great hot sauce, but has little other Himalayan food despite its being Tibetan owned and operated. It’s mostly a Chinese-style all-you-can-eat buffet. (Its name is of course a reference to Mount Everest.)
• Thakali Express promises to have (south) South Asian cuisine as well as Himalayan, and that is certainly the case at Merit as well. I have also noticed larger numbers of Himalayan- or Central Asian–looking people working at other places, like Nanking and the southern Roti Boti. They often seem to speak Hindi surprisingly well, and I witnessed a smooth conversation in al-Naimat between Himalayan (likely Tibetan) customers speaking Hindi to a waiter who was speaking Urdu back to them. (And it was chit-chat, not simply ordering food.) Now that I think about it, maybe a number of them are Nepali and thus familiar with Indo-Aryan languages.

Eating in Translation is reporting that Himalayan Yak will finally reopen on Sept. 25, 2008.  Hooray!

If you haven't tried Himalayan Yak's weekend brunch from 12-3pm on Saturdays and Sundays, you're in for a treat.  It's a great way to sample their dishes, and the renovation they did over the past year really improved the setting.  It's lovely and relaxing.

I may have to try this.  Question ... is this the restaurant that replaced that really spicy food place Core (I think it was Korean?) in that mini shopping center on Roosevelt south side, a block before the Greek church?

I don't know the restaurant Core, but Himalayan Yak is not in the shopping mall, it's right on Roosevelt Ave across from the mall, on the South side of the street.  It's been there for a while, but had been closed for renovations for almost a year until a month ago and has a new facade.

Has anyone been to Thakali since they crossed off "Indian" from their signage and left "Tibetan and Nepali"?  Just curious about whether the food has significantly changed.

I noticed a small place that seems to be about to open (maybe?) on the corner of 76th St. and 37th Rd. that says, among other things, "Bhutanese."

I went to Mustang/Thakali the week it re-opened as Nepali & Tibetan only.   It was awkward because several people came in and promptly left when they were told there was no Indian food.  That being said I thought it was excellent and I have gotten delivery from there since. The food is stylistically a bit different than Himalyan Yak, but I think on the same level quality-wise.

Chowhounds have been tracking the growing Himalayan scene in Queens for some time. Thakali Kitchen in Jackson Heights serves up something new, Joe MacBu reports: specialties of the Thakali people from northern Nepal.

The signature starch in the Thakalis’ homeland, the rugged Mustang region, is buckwheat, prepared here as a mash (dhido) or a flatbread (roti); Joe prefers the latter, a thick, dense pancake that makes a fine foil to the chicken curry, cauliflower-potato curry, pickled radish, and dollop of hot sauce that come alongside.

Besides the handful of Thakali choices on the menu, there are exceptionally good Nepali and Tibetan dishes too. Joe, who’s from Nepal, ranks this as one of the better Nepali restaurants in Queens, if not the United States....

Thumbs up on Thakali Kitchen!  Even the vegetarian was happy.  Tried the strange crunchy salad with soybeans and rice flakes that was mentioned in the link above, the lo mein, momos, a very thin pancake-like omelet appetizer and the mustard greens.  We ordered "regular spicyness" and it was flavorful and the right amount of heat for us.
