That Tornado and Storm ...
« on: September 16, 2010, 08:04:27 PM »

... was apparently the final notice for many of the trees in our borough.

The news had extensive damage, and some shots looked like they could be local.  One person was killed on the GCP, which is a miraculously low fatality rate for the amount of trees that seem to have fallen.

Statement by Council Member Daniel Dromm Regarding Storm Damage in Jackson Heights

â€œToday many areas of my district were hard hit by a sudden storm.  On 75th Street, where my office is located, two trees were destroyed by the storm.  One tree split in half and the other fell across the street blocking traffic.  Additionally, a construction fence was destroyed.  The northbound side of 75th Street was closed to traffic by the NYPD.

The police are on the scene and are now monitoring the situation.  My office will work closely with the NYPD and the Parks Department to remove and replace the trees and to repair any damage to nearby property.

People with other concerns should feel free to contact my office at 718-803-6373.  We will try to assist them in any way we can.”

City didn't, and should have, suspend alternate side parking on friday.  it will be difficult and dangerous to find parking with all the downed trees.  any fines for not moving the car today should be negated.

On my way to the train this morning to go to work I saw on 75 Street out side 35-52 or 54 a 10ft maybe taller tree snapped in half like a twig blocking entrance to those houses turned offices.

Take a bike ride or walk or drive where you can get through near Flushing Meadows and the parts of Corona near Citifield.
It's intense how many trees are down, awnings ripped off, cars damaged. So much more to see in person than what I felt
from watching the news. These neighbors got slammed and many folks were walking around in disbelief today like you
see when you watch tragic storms or tornadoes hit other areas. This storm was MAJOR especially all around the Hall
of Science.

I was at Flushing Meadows Park with my dog yesterday during the late morning and mid day hours.
It's going to be awhile before I go back there unfortunately. 111th St is where I park and I heard that
street is a mess.

My brother who lives in Bayside still has no cable/internet, but has power. His neighbors across the street
haven't had power restored yet and it might not be until Sunday. They are handing out free dry ice at
Cunningham Park. His car's back window was blown out and the interior of the car was soaked.
He will be among many others taking their cars to the auto body shops tomorrow.

Yes, Forest Hills was hit really bad. I was almost hit by a tree branch on my way home and had to hold on to a parking meter to keep from blown into the middle of Queens Blvd.

FEMA will be assessing the damages this weekend. Unknown if any money will be made available from them just yet.
Some of our Queens parks got hit hard, I found a link to help with the clean up. This too shall pass but we will most
certainly never forget.

I think it's best to just ignore those negative nods.  Someone is obviously bored.   ::)

Back to the storm, I heard on NY1 that there were two tornadoes that touched down.   I may be wrong, but I think one in Brooklyn, and the other in Queens.  I was out of town for a few days, so I'm kind of trying to catch up on the events.
