Possible New School
« on: January 10, 2008, 03:08:40 PM »
Does anyone know what the plans are for the plot of land on 34th Avenue that recently saw the demolition of the brick house?  I came across the following information while browsing through some real estate posts at Craigslist.  I'm not sure how large the plot is, but it sounds like this may be the land in question.  The post details a plot of land that is available for purchase, and this plot seems to have been pre-approved for the construction of a 5 story building housing 14 condo units.  Asking price is $2,250,000.

http://newyork.craigslist.org/que/rfs/532324134.html

If the above is indeed the plot located on 34th Avenue, I hope that whatever residential development occurs will take into account the overall aesthetic features of the neighborhood.  I would hate to see "Fedders" housing or similar development go up.   Unfortunately, this seems to be the trend these days in outer borough real estate development.  The fact that the post advertises this plot of land as being approved for the construction of condo units actually may be a saving grace.

I am guessing from the description that it is on 90th St. or thereabouts, as it says "3 blocks from historic district" and "3 blocks from 7 train".  And we already know it's on 34th Ave.

I may be wrong, but I thought the craigslist post may have been referring to the plot located on 34th Ave. and in the mid 70s.  Again, I may be wrong.

There is nothing where the demolition is done up in my neck of the woods (91 and 34th ave) must be referring to the 34th and 73rd street lot that was recently demolished.  I would be shocked if anything other than a "fedders' (funny and apt) box went up there, but you never know.

One is a hole in the ground...the other an eyesore..what's going on? Once, these were majestic homes.

The house that is still standing is going to be knocked down. The one that already has been is apparently is for sale.

I walked by them today and it was horrible to see the one where all the vegetation was gone, the fence was broken and bent plus there are "rodent" notices all over.  I loved this building before even with the over grown shrubs etc.  Now it's a shamble.  I hope it doesn't get knocked down and replaced with those homogeneous 2 family houses we see everywhere.
First, do no harm.

The School Construction Authority is proposing a new middle school on the northeast and northwest corners of 74th Street and 34th Avenue.

They have begun the process of making this a reality

-yes this is the site of those empty lots, where historic houses once stood

-yes this is across the street from Intermediate School 230

Very interesting.  Would this be for a charter school, or for another general intermediate school?  Can you point us to any more information about this proposal?

By the way, what is the quality of the schools in the area?

I know there are several of them, but what's the word on the quality vs. quantity issue?

http://www.insideschools.org provides reviews and ratings for all of the schools in the city.  I don't have any firsthand insights to report on this yet, only that I've heard that our elementary schools are well regarded.

There is a big push across the city not only to build more classrooms to reduce crowded and class sizes, but also to reorganize schools into smaller discrete units.  Sometimes two or more "small schools" are located within a single building.  I think this approach is being promoted because it allows for greater choice and flexibility, and a less impersonal learning community.   I bring this up as a possible explanation for why the city may be building these smaller school buildings so close together.  But perhaps somebody who knows more about this can shed some light on what may be going on.

I can't seem to find any information anywhere about a new school going up at the corner of 74th St & 34th Ave. What is the source of this information?

A proposal was presented by the School Construction Authority (SCA) at a Jackson Heights Community Board meeting last week to demolish the historic house at 33-55 74th Street (corner of 34th Avenue) and erect a five-story school building for 390 students from the Junior High School across the street. The SCA also proposed to create a school yard on the construction lot at 33-54 74th Street, which is also opposite the Junior High School. The school would then monopolize three corners of the intersection.

The proposed new construction will adversely change the architectural integrity of the neighborhood by towering over the two-story private homes that currently make up the rest of that quiet residential block. It will also destroy a noteworthy house that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Anyone interested in saving the house or commenting on the SCA's proposal should send a WRITTEN LETTER to:

Mr. Ross Holden
VP, General Counsel
School Construction Authority
30-30 Thompson Avenue
Long Island City, NY 11101

The end of the open period during which the SCA will entertain public comments is April 1, 2008, so make sure to have your letter in by that date.

It is anticipated that a public hearing will also be held in Jackson Heights on or about Thursday, March 27th. SCA representatives will be on hand at the hearing to make a presentation, and the project will be open to public debate.

It is important to make a large showing of hands, both through correspondence with the SCA and personal attendance at the hearing. If the Jackson Heights community remains silent on this issue, the School Construction Authority will surely win approval for a project that is highly questionable and that will have adverse effects on the neighborhood that are too numerous to list here.
