First-ever radio advertisement

Not sure if everyone was aware of this, but I heard this while viewing a documentary on NYC in the 20's -- the first-ever radio advertisement was for an apartment development in Jackson Heights!  (Not sure which apartment bldg.)

I believe it was a commercial for The Towers.

The advertisement was actually for Hawthorne Court.  A number of years back, by pure happenstance, I heard a little piece on a NPR show about that advertisement and they actually played it.  How a copy survived and how they obtained it I have no idea.

Growing up in hawthorne Court, I actually recall people knowinga nd telling me this.

Not sure how they found the original ad for the recording though ... an old reel to reel or did it pre-date that?

It's also mentioned in Eric Barnouw's book "A Tower in Babel" the 1st of three volumes on the history of U.S. broadcasting (pp. 110-112).  It includes the text of what was probably the first 30 seconds of the ad. Barnouw cites the source as Gleason L. Archer's book "History of Radio: to 1926" published in 1938 by the American Historical Society.
