Jack Heights
« on: February 20, 2008, 03:05:02 PM »
Last year, MPC Properties earned some fame/notoriety for its "Billy Burg meet Jack Heights" ad.

Now, they've gone a step further and developed an animated Jack Heights character!  The New York Observer says he "bears a startling resemblance to Mr. Peanut."  Personally, I'm happy to welcome Jack to the hood: his combination of whimsy, vaguely Sanskrit-looking form, and obvious love for good food make him a perfect fit for our community.   But perhaps he could use a different hat.

What do you think?  Any of you artists out there have any ideas for a counterproposal?

I placed my thumb over the top hat and noticed that I prefer Jack to go hatless.  Nonetheless, the fact that he is unique to Jackson Heights and no other New York City neighborhood has a "mascot" like him makes Jack special in my book.  I vote that we embrace him as one of our own!

I saw a "Meet Jack Heights" poster up on the 82nd. street bus shelter yesterday facing 37th ave. But tonight it has vanished.

I think the top hat makes Jack look classy, reminiscent of the folk for whom this neighborhood was built 80 years ago.

I happened to notice that Jack Heights is featured on a large billboard off the BQE.  Saw it on our drive to Red Hook this a.m.  Looking at him from a distance, he kind of looked pregnant!  Completely different perspective!  :o

Now that wouldn't be exactly representative of the Jackson Heights community as a whole, would it?

Hello all--I'm new to the site.  I actually found it through the Jack Heights site, which I also saw on a billboard on the BQE the other day.  I've lived on 83rd St. between Roosevelt and 37th for about 4 years.  It's good to find so many people actively contributing to the various topics.  I've learned a lot from the different posts.

The real estate agent behind Jack Heights has also advertised in Park Slope.  The tag line was something like, "Jackson Heights: more park, less slope."  I guess they were referring to the common areas some buildings have and not that huge concrete park on 34th Ave.  At any rate, I found it interesting that they were targeting a newly gentrified neighborhood for customers.  Does anyone know if they've targeted other Brooklyn neighborhoods?  I'd be very surprised if they'd advertised in Manhattan.

Hey Normelrod, welcome to the site! I think "Jack Heights" first made an appearance in Williamsburg. The sign read "Billy Burg meet Jack Heights" or something like that. I think it's MPC's attempt to hipsterize JH with a name in the way people refer to WB.

I am slightly concerned about Jack's waist-to-hip ratio.

The billyburg ad really bugs me out. I seriously would have never seen Jackson Heights being marketed in hipster town.

Being a third generation resident in Jackson Heights, I am still shocked at the "flourishing" and gentrification in my home town. It seemed like it always had potential, despite Roosevelt Avenue.  Now Roosevelt Avenue appears to be less sordid... Whatever Jack Heights, MPC Properties and these other brokers are doing, it seems to be working and is changing the neighborhood.

The landmarking status is also helping maintain and improve the area.
I think it is really that the secret of our great area has gotten out and more people want to enjoy life in JH.
I have been here since the mid '50s and have seen a lot of changes. I still love this area.
