New Bench, Same Problem
« on: June 16, 2010, 04:53:26 PM »
The other day I noticed Maram pharmacy donated a bench to the community for use outside their store.  I meant to applaud this, but forgot.  (Belated kudoes though!)

As I walking home, about 4:20 this afternoon, I noticed it was strewn with litter.  An older person with a cane stopped by, looked for a second like he would sit, then thought better of it.

Just that fast, another improvement in the neighborhood was mistreated.

It made me rethink my whole diagram sugegstion for the park/playstreet benches ...  :(

Any guesses to why littering is such a big problem in this neighborhood?

No enforcement. This is true even of certain store owners, many of which never sweep the outside of their stores. If you had a sanitation officier go down 37th Ave. ticketing, I bet things would be a lot cleaner

What a nice gesture-especially for his customers that might need to rest.  It is a shame and I'm surprised it wasn't a homeless person sleeping there. The post office did away with their benches because of this. I know alot of neighborhood folks loved sitting outside untill a rowdy few took.

Perhaps a solution for trash around the Maram bench would be a small garbage pail ? It seems to me, that for the most part (not always) people in general will put trash in a garbage can if one is provided.

Exactly there is so much whining but never asking why!!!!!!!!!!  We definitely need more trash receptacles!!

There's a garbage pail within ten feet of it, that was something I left off which is what astonished me even more.

And again, kudoes to Maram for even having a bench ... today I saw a lady and her stroller there, and it was clean.

I took a look as I walked by today, too, and there were two people enjoying a conversation there as I passed.  I also noted the trash can within ten feet (at the corner).  I hope the bench doesn't become a problem for the store or the city.  It's nice that they put it up.  Uruguaya Bakery between 85th and 86th also has a small bench that is well-used.

10 feet maybe very close, I agree. But it does not beat the convenience of a small pail within 1 foot of the bench. Unfortunately, we are seeking to change the behavior of a diverse amount of people. In a case like this, it seems to be the path of least resistance to simply put a small pail closer to the bench than it does to wage a full fleged education campaign to get people to use the garbage basket that's 10 feet away. Of course, we could always say thanks but no thanks to Maram for the bench.

I sit on the Maram bench daily with my little ones.  We watch all our neighbors go by and the kids love being social, so it works beautifully.  There is no garbage and anything that the children need to dispose of gets thrown out at the corner garbage pail.  We don't experience a problem with the new bench.

Best,

I agree - and sturdier ones than the type we (used to) have on 82nd Street.

perhaps if both were gold plated and strewn with the finest saffron........nah, they'd still find reasons to complain.
