Parasitic cab drivers by the bus terminal
« on: June 15, 2010, 04:10:57 PM »
When I occasionally take a bus at the 75Th street terminal I see gypsy cabs blocking the bus lanes, honking at prospective passengers, soliciting people who are just walking, making illegal u-turns so they are in front of the terminal and when the TLC or cops come they scatter like cockroaches. I think TLC inspectors should be stationed there permanently. Many of these so called cabs have no license and don't even have NY plates.

I have livery cabs. They incessantly honk at me while I wait to cross Roosevelt because they think I'm lost in this neighborhood. Plus, if you actually do pull them over, they pull random fare quotes out of the air.

At 31st and 77th, a friend of mine had ten cabs solicit my friend while waiting for the QM22.

May I ask why you feel the cab drivers think you're lost in this neighborhood?

Dunno, Patty. Maybe I should ask them instead of just flipping them off as they creep past me really slowly so I can't cross the street. Seriously, though, it's probably because I stand out in this neighborhood.

It feels like you guys are baiting me about race. I never said anything about race. I just wanted to vent my frustration over annoying livery cabs. Kinda makes me wanna withdraw from this message board.

i totally hate the behavior of most livery drivers here -- the honking at pedestrians, the u-turns, the bad driving -- but you are the one who said you feel like you stand out. that, to me, indicates that you may be caucasian. or inuit. if it's the latter, you certainly do. if it's the former, um, let's just say that you need to actually look around a little more. not trying to be offensive, but community board 3, jackson heights, is still more non-hispanic white than any other group.

I see plenty of Caucasians people: Old white people lecture me about my geriatric dog very often.  While it's indisputable that Jackson Heights is extremely racially diverse, there are a lot of people we don't see a lot of: Yuppies, hipsters, Hasidics, etc.

I'm actually biracial. I was referring to the way I dress and style myself compared to other females I see. Plus the fact that there aren't that many twenty something females walking home at one a.m.

ah, good point, re: walking home at one. i am 40 and walk home at that time of night pretty regularly, but there aren't many single people at all walking home at that time. i see what you mean, no sarcasm, and f or real.

but if you need immersion in yuppies, head over to one of the coffee places on a weekday morning. you'll be swimmin' in 'em :)

Aren't there vaccines now for when one expects to be immersed in yuppies?  :)

Sorry, I know, just trying to inject levity ...

I knew I should have bought that sad clown painting at the art fair this past weekend. Drats!

I have to say that I have used those drivers on occasion.  After working very late, then getting off the train just to take a bus the rest of the way home feels a little overwhelming.  Also, I was extremely ill one night and had no cash -- I started to walk over to the Citibank and a livery driver helped me get there and then drove me home. He wasn't going to take money, but I insisted as I was grateful for his help. I haven't been at the 74th St station in a while, so I don't know if it's gotten worse, but I've been grateful for the ones that were there last fall.
