It's finally here!
Opening ceremony and ribbon-cutting at 4:00 this Thursday (May 27)!
Which means it will be open just in time for the long weekend!

Thanks to a huge number of individuals. Thanks, Jeff - who brought this idea to the Community Board 3 years ago and started the whole thing - and the many individuals and not-for-profit groups (big kudos to JHBG) city (CB 3) and stage agencies (NYS DOT) who have given so much time and energy in making sure that this park wasn't forgotten or blocked by red-tape.

If you don't already have an application, you can download one from the website http://jhdogs.ning.com.
Membership is free (although we do have a suggested donation to help cover operating expenses) and open to all - we just need to ensure that all dogs using the park are vaccinated and licensed.

See you all there!

Kudos Marcus and everyone else for their hard work.  The dog run looks amazing.

I just have to say, I think licensing your dog in New York is a joke and I hope this doesn't prove a problem for people who wish to use the dog run in the future.  In the five years that I have lived here, each year it is has taken longer and longer and longer to renew my dog's license.

This year, we sent in a check about six months ago and still have not received the license which expired at least five months ago.  We have called the city at least four or five times to no avail.

I can't comment on other options for people who are waiting for their NYC dog license yet.

I will say that when doing it online, we got a receipt instantly, and our new license in the mail in about two weeks.

Great link Marcus. Thanks.  Wish we had done it this way.  They even cashed our check but refuse to send us a license renewal sticker.  They always tell us that it is "pending".  I hope no one else has to go through this.

You should be able to check your account number online -  license numbers change from year-to-year - and see what the holdup is.  We just get a new card and a sticker every year to put on the metal tag.

I think we're willing to accept proof of registration with the city (canceled check, online printout of registration etc.) as an interim solution while waiting for a dog license to be processed - if you've filed your registration/renewal, just send us a copy of that. However we won't allow any compromise on an updated valid vaccination certificate -  a vet will give that out instantly as soon as the dog has received the shot.

Someone from the group will also be on hand to accept membership applications handed in in-person on Thursday at the opening at 4:00, and we'll work on finding additional times when in-person registrations can be completed as well.

We've also adopted the change in rules about children in the park - children will be permitted in the dog park (but ONLY with direct supervision by an adult parent or other caretaker).

Hi Marcus,  Thanks for all your hard work.  Sadly, I don't think my pooch and I will get much playtime out of the dog park as we are moving.  However, I will be sure to let new people know about the amazing park and how they can help out and get in touch with you.  Our building is very pet friendly which is great.

I just wanted to let you know how many problems I had with getting a license just in case other people went through the same thing.  I hope I didn't make you go too far out of your way for me.  I do appreciate all the information.

So how did the grand opening go?  Did a lot of dogs and their people show up?   :D

It was a great opening - we had about 25-30 dogs show up between 4-6.

Until the lock is installed early next week, the park will be open to all this weekend from 7AM-10PM. Please stop by with your pooch and say hello - and if you haven't joined yet, you can get your membership application online at http://jhdogs.ning.com

It's at the top of the application form - but here it is again:
JHCREW
c/o JHBG • PO BOX 720253 • Jackson Heights • NY 11372

Reviewing the form, I suppose we could make that part a little clearer!

We wish it was easier to do the dog park, but since we're not in a NYC Park, but instead on state DOT land, we have to get our own insurance and liability - and ensuring that all dogs are vaccinated is a key part of that.
