Coffee shop on 77 street - lousy hot cup of tea
« on: May 15, 2010, 11:02:59 AM »
Hello all,
Recently I went into the coffee shop on 77 street near 37 ave. and I was extremely disappointed.  They did not use fresh, boiled water to make the tea.  They used warm water.  This is a coffee shop- they should know how to make a cup hot tea properly.  Tea drinkers constantly have a problem getting establishments to make a decent cup of tea.  I did mention this problem the counter attendant, but she did not know how to make tea or was not trained properly.  Tea drinkers should unite and demand hot tea be served properly.

I was recently in your shop and was extremely disappointed.  I ordered a hot tea- and I received a cup with lukewarm water- not freshly boiled.  I did mention it to the counter attendant- she obviously did not know how to make a cup of hot tea.  It is bad enough that tea drinkers have a constant problem with places other than coffee houses about the inability of the staff to use freshly boiled water for tea.  You of all establishments should know better.

They do make an excellent cappuccino! The employees are always super nice and the owner seems to always be there to make sure all is ok. Thumbs up!

Tea is my drink of choice there and the tea I've gotten has always been very hot.  :)

Good for you, but "hot" is not boiling.  Tea should be made with freshly boiled water, least of in case there was any type of bacteria present in the leaves.  Also, to release the most flavor.  I stand by what I was served- lousy tea.

I always make green tea at home as per the directions on the packaging- with water that is steaming briskly, but not boiling, and then steeping for 1-2 minutes as to not become bitter. Boiling water is not always the standard.

I also stand by what I got - good tea.

It's funny - I am the co-founder of this board and while I am happy when we get new members, I am always a bit sad when I see new members whose first posts are to complain about a neighborhood business.

So I guess I am biased in two ways - JHL founder and Espresso 77 supporter.

That said, I hope you will continue to join other discussions on here, as active participation is the only thing that will keep this forum alive.

Green tea is not black tea.  I am very, very sorry if the truth is unacceptable.

If you're not happy with the tea or anything they've served you at Espresso 77, just tell them, they will fix it for you. Most of the times when I'm there the manager is there as well and he is a nice and helpful guy! And trust me, I'm picky too.

i am not a tea drinker as a rule, but if bacteria is an issue, i'll presume you order all your salads boiled as well?

FYI- I did inform the person who gave me the tea- what my concerns were- she did not have a clue.  You have no idea if my spouse or anyone else in my family posts here- perhaps glowingly and often.  Two posts would be unnecessary.   i assume that my salad greens would be washed appropriately.  Boiling tea leaves is a different issue.  If the attitude of the moderator is so afraid of receiving any well deserved negative comments, I have to wonder if you are receiving compensation for encouraging "good" posts.  I remember reading a post about how the quality of the coffee has improved over the course of a year.  I did not notice a little reprimand to that poster.

Julie here from Espresso 77...
I have been holding off jumping into this discussion, but this last comment, insinuating some sort of quid pro quo, is completely wrong and frankly, quite hurtful.
Leitrim, if you have some issue with how we prepare tea, my husband and co-owner is at the shop today and most days, and is happy to talk with you about it.  We are not a specialist tea shop and have never claimed to be - there are amazing places in NYC that do a great job with tea and I'm sure they are incredibly detailed in how they prepare it.  We have picked out the best tea that fits the price points that our customers are comfortable with and with the exception of your criticisms, the tea has found a happy audience.  But like I said, we are very happy to talk with our customers and to try to find a way to meet your needs.  Please feel free to email me directly at info@espresso77.com to discuss further.

Why is this hurtful?  Maybe you should review your procedures. Being admonished for a truthful comment almost amounts to censorship.
