Kitchen Countertops
« on: April 29, 2010, 09:18:43 PM »
We are looking to purchase Granite or Marble countertops.  Can anyone suggest places to purchase Kitchen Countertops? I would be most interested in a place that has cheap prices, good quality, and will also install.

So far we have looked and priced through Home Depot, Lowes, Marino’s in Queens, Forever Stone Inc. & Eastern Sunrise Tile & Marble Inc. in Flushings. Looking for more options with good prices with better color options.

Any suggestions would be great and if anyone had a bad experience with the above places mentions I would be interested in knowing.

Thanks!

No marble unless you never cook.  Depends on your color choices, dark granite are easier to maintain.

Check Flushing, Prince street, north of Northern Blvd.  As the old saying quality, price, service, pick two.

If I had marble countertops they would looked like a patchwork quilt by now.  Bottom line granite is a much better surface for kitchen countertops.  Marble is lovely but is way too porous and stains terribly.
One day your life will flash before your eyes. Make sure its worth watching.

If you don't mind going to Brooklyn, I'd recommend Foro Marble for countertops.

I'm countertop shopping right now as well.

There are a plethora of stores right off the Liden Blvd blvd exit on the Whitestone Expwy when you make the right right.  Within that 3-4 block radius you will find quite a few.  All of them will come to your place, measure and then install usually the following day.  The pricing they gave you includes everything  with prices ranging from $30-$120sq. ft.

My two cents:

The extra cost you pay to have a stone/corian/etc. counter installer come out in advance when the cabinets are all in and take their own measurements and make a template for the counter will pay dividends in the end.  As professionals, they have the experience to take all the right measurements and make the right allowances, and in the end, if the counter is not quite right, they have to fix it at their cost.

I had originally assumed that we could just go through Home Depot to get our Caesarstone counters, but they don't offer a measuring service, so we looked for another supplier.  We ended up working with Davis and Warshow in Maspeth, and the counters came out perfectly.

New Hao Stone Inc
(718) 321-1161
Flushing,

Don't waste your time anywhere else....granite 1.25" from $25 per foot...installation is usually a flat rate...Don't go to their showroom on College Point...go to the main contractors spot on 41st.  Tell them "Uncle Loui" sent You.  They have everything - even marble (light marble tops stain so make sure You keep it away from grease and especially red wine and the like  ;) TY Contessa)  They will charge You $100 to come out to your place and measure but will give you credit against your purchase and can have it in a day or two...

Good Luck

PS.  If you want the exact address and contact send me an email   ;)

Marino Tile

Sorry...way over priced.....I'm a contractor and there is no way the average contractor shops there.  They do have a big selection and quite a few showrooms...but I can get anything they have for 30 to 50% less in 10 other places within 5 miles from any of their stores.

You want it cheap?  I can only offer a suggestion for good quality and service.  Stone weighs - well, like stone, and is hard as - well, a rock, but it is fragile on the truck, up the stairs, and over your newly finished floor.  If it is not cut just right, you either take it out and back to the stone yard, cut it on site or alter the walls or cabinets to make it fit.  All the while, you risk damaging your property.  Save your money, pay somebody who knows what they are doing and is not in a rush.

I agree. Cheap is almost never better when it comes to construction.

I absolutely agree!  Going on the cheap is not always a good thing.  Why not look around for countertops and see what catches your eye and then go from there.

I am in agreement with all of you...But when it comes to materials   you compare apples with apples and you avoid paying more for the same material or almost identical materials.  Natural Stone it's very specific to it's region and the Granite counter industry is not unlike the flooring market.  For example I wouldn't pay $48 per sq foot for a Black Galaxy granite counter from a fancy showroom when I can get it for $35 per square foot at a warehouse like "contractor spot" just as I wouldn't pay a GC to get my Brazilian Koa when I can get it directly from $3.80 per foot.  Some  folk (privileged or not) wouldn't have it any other way but to have all of their samples brought to them because they either wont or can't deal with the amount of work and decision making that is required for even a simple project as a basic bathroom or kitchen.  One of those times is when the decision is made by many such as is the case of a Coop board.  The easiest way is to hire an architect or professional interior designer instead of imposing on one of the members and then second guessing every decision he/she makes.

Get what you like, but compare apples with apples and when it comes to natural stone don't let anyone fool you with the country of origin like when you hear a contractor tell You he only uses Black Galaxy from Italy... :2funny:

Good Luck ;)

Thanks everyone. I've done a ton of research, visits to shops, etc. Found a place that works for me that has good quality and service but comes with a nice price (better then a Lowes/Home Depot)
