Packing/Shipping
« on: February 12, 2008, 01:24:56 AM »
Hello-

I need to send several moderately large antiques to Europe.  Does anyone know who might do packing and shipping in the general area of 35th and 77th?

Thanks.

There is a mailbox/shipping store near Deshi Biryani (on 37th between 75th and 76th).  I don't know if they have expertise in packing antiques.

You could try Craters and Freighters, which is not a local company, but they do service Queens.  http://www.cratersandfreighters.com/cf/home.do
(I don't have any personal experience with them.)

UPS drop-off/place to mail a package on Sunday?
« Reply #3 on: September 27, 2008, 10:10:39 PM »
I have a package that I need to mail tomorrow.  I have a prepaid UPS label, so I'd prefer to find a place that will just allow me to drop the package off for them to mail.  Tomorrow is Sunday, so I need a place that will be open.  I don't need it to actually go in the mail then, just for them to take it to be mailed on Monday.  I don't get home from work until late on the weeknights, way after the post office closes.

If not that, what about a fedex/kinkos place or somewhere that will allow me to mail it from there on a Sunday?

I use the place on 37th and 75th a lot.  Not sure about their hours or if they're open today.  I can't recall seeing any drop off boxes around the neighborhood but it's worth looking up on the UPS website.
First, do no harm.

There's a UPS box in front of Starbucks. There is a FedEx place in Forest Hills.

I always send my fedex's from Kelly's on 37th between 84th and 85th.  It's kind of an odd place--mostly lottery tickets, phone cards and newspapers, but they are also an authorized US mail center and you can do the entire fedex process there (they have forms etc.).  I don't know about UPS but I assume they have that too.

I think they may only take cash -- at least they only take cash for US post office transactions.  And the post office window has very limited hours, like only until 2:30pm on weekdays.  Fedex's I've dropped off as late as 5pm.  Usually when I'm sending fedex I am billing to the recipient's account number so I don't think I've ever actually paid cash or anything else for a fedex transaction.

I always feel a little strange leaving my valuable fedex packages there, like I'm a bit afraid they aren't going to end up in the right place, but I've sent at least 10 so far and they are always picked up on time and always arrive on time.

I think they may be open on Sundays but I've never tried to send on a Sunday so you'll have to check it out for yourself.

Whilst walking in the Latino Parade last Sunday I noticed Kelly's was open. So I would assume that would accept UPS packages on Sundays.

I was walking down by 37th & 75th today and saw Mailboxes Plus.. asked them their hours, and they said they are 10-8pm everyday, including Sunday.  Good to know for the future.

by the way, I found out yesterday that Kelly's on 37th at 85th does not offer Fedex ground service, only fedex express.  They do have UPS and a postal counter.

As I walked down 83rd St. I noticed that the signage is now up for The UPS Store in the new building on the corner of 83rd and Roosevelt.  Don't know when it will be open.

Peralta warns buyers to watch what they ship
By Jeremy Walsh
Friday, November 28, 2008 12:15 PM EST

Holiday gift-givers sending packages overseas may be tempted to use discount shippers operating out of storefronts in Queens, but trusting them could be a mistake, state Assemblyman Jose Peralta (D-Jackson Heights) said last Thursday.

Peralta urged cash-strapped residents to ask shippers to show them a federal license before they pay to send an item to countries like the Dominican Republic. Several people have called his office to complain their packages were lost and there is no way to recover the money, Peralta said.

“They end up losing more than they thought they would pay,” Peralta said.

Corona resident Antonio Bourdier said he used Bonao Direct Shipping Corp. at 98-02 37th Ave. in Corona to send relatives in the Dominican Republic a package worth $1,000. Eight months later, the package still has not been delivered and Bonao is out of business.

They seem to be doing Fedex Ground service now.  The service was good today.  I am grateful to have this place as shipping and mailing are so much easier when there's a place close by.
