78th Street Play Street for 2010
« on: April 10, 2010, 08:17:54 PM »
Hello! The good weather is coming and our poor, park-deprived neighborhood needs help. We are applying for the Play Street again this year, to run every Sunday from June 1st to October 31st.

There is something different happening this year; an initiative spearheaded by our new City Councilman Danny Dromm and his staff. We are applying to keep the Play Street going for the entire months of July and August, Mondays to Sundays! We need some help though.

Primarily, we need our petition signed by you. The more signatures we get in favor of this, the greater the likelihood of it actually happening.

If you're not sure what the Play Street is, here's a brief explanation:

For the past two years, a coalition of neighborhood groups aided by many volunteers have closed 78th Street between 34th and Northern to traffic on every Sunday during the Summer. This relieves some of the congestion in Travers Park and opens up the street for all sorts of activities. More information can be found on www.jhgreen.org

You can find our petition in Espresso 77 (77th, just north of 37th) - if you're in the mood for a coffee please sign it there, and in Table Wine (37th between 79th and 80th) if you're hankering for some great wines and interesting liquors.

It would be even better if you were to print the petition yourselves, sign it, get your friends and neighbors to sign it and hand it in to either of those places.

The petition can be found here: http://www.jhgreen.org/docs/Summer-Playstreet-signature-page-(2010).pdf

Thanks very much, let me know if you have any questions!

While it is unfortunate that Travers Park will not be able to be fully utilized this summer, a full closure of 78th Street is not a solution, thereby creating an asphalt extension.

It is unfair to the community to close an entire street for months at a time.

-- I would like to know how the surrounding residents feel about this proposal.
             - Garden School operates year round
             - The apartment building on the street will be impacted, as well as those on 77th Street as a result of traffic diversion.

-- My greatest concern is that 78th Street is a through-street for the FDNY, and NYPD.
-- Response times will be affected by the proposal.

While I do support the Play Street, I believe that such a drastic closure cause too negative of an impact on the area.

A scaled back proposal would be best for the community.

If the FDNY or NYPD need to get through, they'll get through.

Yeah, but how long will they be delayed while all the children are moved out of harms way?  The problem I have with this is that between 74th Street and 79th Street, there are only two southbound streets--76th and 78th.    If this goes through, there will be only one southbound option off of Northern Blvd. from 74th to 79th.  76th Street has its own traffic problems as it is.  This will only make it worse.

The Garden School is aware of this and they support it.

The apartment building's entrance is on 34th Avenue, not 78th, so they're not affected by it at all.

Neither the NYPD or the FDNY have expressed any concerns over the Play Street and how it could impact their routes.

This may seem like a drastic thing to do, but it really isn't. It's a one-block-long stretch of a street, it's really not going to have a negative impact on the neighborhood, and it is particularly helpful in our neighborhood due to how little park space we have. Travers Park becomes dangerously crowded in the warm weather, it's not good for the kids or the adults who want to use it. The Play Street helps alleviate this. And it's not just for the kids, many retired/elderly people have taken advantage of it and will do so more if we close it permanently for those months and are able to set it up properly for the entire community to use.

So true Dudley, the park is so dangerous now! The side that remains open is supposed to be for younger children but with no where to go it is filled with babies to 8 year old children. Also, the elderly people and the others that used the areas to exercise are also affected, there is no where for them to go!!

Does anyone know when the new Travers Park playground will open?

Does anyone know when the new Travers Park playground will open?

You'll find some more information on Travers at the following thread.  There are a couple of articles posted there.  One of them mentions that early May could be the opening date.

Dear Friends & Neighbors,

I wanted to share with you the latest news about Travers Park and the 78th Street Play Street.

Throughout my campaign last year, among the most frequent concerns expressed by the community was the severe lack of open space in our area.
I believe that all New Yorkers should have access to quality parks and adequate recreational opportunities.
Our City Council district has the least amount of access to greenspace and park land of any in the city. I am committed to addressing this challenge as a top priority.

Over the past few months, I have received a number of emails and phone calls from residents about the construction at Travers Park.
Many people contacted my office to inquire about when the work would be completed and also about the safety and security of the construction site.
With these concerns in mind, I spoke personally with Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe and asked for special consideration to accelerate the construction at Travers Park.

Although the contract didn't require that the work be completed until October, I am happy to report that my work with Commissioner Benepe
and Queens Parks Commissioner Dorothy Lewandowski has enabled us to have the large playground area open much sooner.
In fact, the large playground area is open as of today.
The staging area for construction will continue to be closed off for approximately six more weeks to allow for smaller fixes to the park including resurfacing.

Travers Park is an excellent playground but is not sufficient in size or layout to service our community.
We have benefited over the last two years from the 78th Street Play Street which provided additional open space for residents to enjoy on Sundays.
This successful initiative was organized by the Jackson Heights Beautification Group, Friends of Travers Park and the Jackson Heights Green Alliance.

These groups have approached me with an innovative and cost-free way to temporarily expand open space for our community --
having the 78th Street Play Street (between Northern Blvd and 34th Avenue) car-free everyday for the summer months of July and August this year.
I believe this is an excellent grass-roots program which I am committed to supporting.

Here is how you can help: Community Board 3 will vote on Thursday, May 20th to either support or not support the July/August car-free experiment on 78th Street.
We need every voice to come out and let the Community Board know your opinion on whether to expand the Play Street operation to July and August everyday.

78th Street Play Street Hearing
Community Board 3
Thursday, May 20th 7:30pm
IS 227 Louis Armstrong School

Please join me in working toward a solution to the vital challenge of inadequate open space in our community.
Working together we can bring the changes we need.

Sincerely,
Daniel Dromm
New York City Council Member, 25th District

I have another engagement at that time and can't break it. Would a letter or call to the CB office (or some other entity) be useful?

Walked by Travers Park (Playground) today and looked like the park is now all open.  I didn't notice any significant renovation or improvements. Looked like a new tennis net on the blacktop. Curious if someone knows what was done for all the money spent to renovate our only park.  Also, as I walked around the perimeter (the fence still looks shabby) and thought wouldn't it be nice if there were some benches to sit away from the hectic, noisy playground area.  Benches are sorely missing in the neighborhood.  Hope to see continued improvements in public space for all to enjoy in Jackson Heights.

Hi! Just a quick reminder that we will be marching from Travers Park to the Community Board meeting in the Louis Armstrong school (32-02 Junction Boulevard). The purpose is to show support for the Play Street for this year.

We're applying to have it run for the entire months of July and August and we're hoping that a lot of community support will help convince the community board members of how important the Play Street is.

So we'll be meeting at Travers Park (the corner of 78th and 34th) at 7PM, please come if you can, or go straight to the meeting at 7:45.

Also, whether you're coming or not please email the community board at: communityboard3@nyc.rr.com and Council Member Danny Dromm at: dromm@council.nyc.gov and let them know that you support this initiative.

Thanks!

Dudley

TODAY! members of Community Board #3 will have an opportunity to give residents of Jackson Heights two months of play street this summer! We have the least amount of open space per capita in all of New York City and the play street really helps alleviate this problem.

We need you to march with us TODAY at 7 p.m. from Travers Park to I.S. 227 to call on all community board members to vote for two months of more open space for our neighbors. I will be there and so should you!

For the past two years, the Jackson Heights Beautification Group, Friends of Travers Park, and Jackson Heights Green Alliance have organized an initiative to close 78th Street between 34th Avenue and Northern Boulevard so that our children and families may enjoy their Sundays outdoors and close to home in a car-free, community environment.

Travers Park, our only park, is too often too overcrowded. Continuing this experiment will allow us to spill over to the street adjacent to Travers Park so that more of our children can exercise and play.

PLEASE COME, OUR CHILDREN NEED US!
