15+ Cars Vandalized on 85th Street
« on: April 04, 2010, 11:23:58 AM »
At least 15 cars had tires slashed last night on 85th Street between 37th & 35th Ave and, unfortunately, mine was one of them.  >:(
I made a police report but the responding officers said that they could not record the damage to the other cars unless the owners were present.

Really sorry to hear about your car, and all the other ones.  I hope anyone who has a car parked on this block will go out and check it today.

When I went to look, I saw about 8 cars with one flat tire each.  Either I just didn't see the other 7 or their owners had already come to take their cars away.  They were all located approximately outside the Roosevelt Towers guard booth.  Does anyone know if there is usually a guard stationed in there at night?

Thanks for your note of sympathy. Ironic where it happened, isn't it? Yes, there is a "guard" but he makes rounds of the 4 buildings, garages, etc. so he is not always in the booth. I have a spot in one of the RT parking lots but incompetents started "fixing" the lot's surface and the roof of the underground garage last July and it's still not completed. Since I have been parking on the street, my car has been keyed, broken into (about 3 weeks ago), and now this. Sigh, I just put all new tires on it 6 weeks ago.

Hey so sorry to hear about your car. There was another incident similar to this a couple of months ago by the Towers. Lack of police and enforcement when they are present.

sorry to hear about this.  I'd suggest going to the NYPD 115th community council meeting. it's the 3rd Tuesday of every month (so April 20, 2010)

Meetings: The Community Council meetings are held the third Tuesday of the month (except July and August) at 8:00 p.m. at the 115th Precinct, 92-15 Northern Boulevard.

the 115 Commanding Officer is there and you can let him know about your concerns. Local politicians, or their staff, are there too. Our precinct is geographically huge and I think sometimes they forget that the lower crime areas of the 115 still need attention.

That is messed up, probably some kids with nothing better to do. It could have been worse, they could have stolen all 4 of your wheels/tires and left your car on blocks. Worst part is that you had new tires on. The NYPD doesn't do much at night except write tickets.

This event almost coincides with the Easter day "wilding" that occurred by Times Square.  I haven't checked crime reports pertaining to other neighborhoods, but this does sound gang related.  It wouldn't surprise me if similar crimes were committed that same weekend in other areas of New York City.

I have heard of several stories  on JH Families that there continues to be a rash of car vandalism in Jackson Heights. Was wondering if anyone knows this to be true. From time to time I know this happens, but is it more of a regular thing now? So senseless.

I had the windshield stolen right off my motorcycle several months ago while parked on 76th between 35th and 37th.  I actually waited (a long time) for the police to arrive so that I could make a report and it would appear on their statistics.  After my wait, they told me I'd have to go to the precinct, which was just too much trouble; so I never did.

The point of all of this is that I am certain that many or even most of these crimes to cars go unreported for reasons like mine; or because people don't want to wait for the cops to come.  Whatever the statistics for the precinct say about property crimes like this, the real figure is undoubtably way above that; maybe even epidemic.  It's always going on.  So we either have to go to the precinct meetings to make sure they understand the frequency with which this happens, and/or take the trouble to actually file reports so they will show up in the statistics and some attention will be paid to them.  I'm out quite a bit at night, and I virtually have never seen a patrol car in my area.

This is really horrible.  Unfortunately this is becoming a common problem in Astoria right now as well.  http://www.nydailynews.com/ny_local/queens/2010/11/02/2010-11-02_crime_wave_rocks_astoria.html

same exact thing. tires stripped -- and back wndshield smashed -- happened to one of my co-workers around 96th and riverside about a week ago. apparently, toyotas and hondas are most 'in demand' on the black market.
