If anybody has good ideas for how this program can be put to work in Jackson Heights, please share!  Please note the criteria are very specific.

Transportation Enhancement Program Applications Available
by Nancy O’Connell

The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) has just announced the availability of applications for the 2008 Transportation Enhancement Program (TEP). Application forms and a Guidebook for the program are available here.

The purpose of TEP is to strengthen the cultural, aesthetic and environmental aspects of the intermodal transportation system. This unique community-oriented program helps finance non-traditional transportation projects. There are 12 types of projects eligible for TEP funding, including improvements to bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure, scenic and historic preservation, archeological planning and research, and environmental mitigation. For a complete listing of all eligible activities, consult the TEP Guidebook.

TEP project selection is a competitive process. Applications for funding may be developed by any municipality or nonprofit incorporated group, but must be sponsored either by a municipality, state agency or eligible public entity. Activities funded under the program must be accessible to the general public or targeted to a broad segment of the general public. The Federal funding share is generally 80%. The deadline for submitting applications is June 27, 2008.

NYSDOT and NYMTC will be conducting TEP workshops in March 2008. The workshops will also be webcast to facilitate those who are unable to attend in person. Watch NYMTC Notes for further information on the workshops.

Wow.  I did a quick read of the guidelines, and it looks like almost anything to do with the 7 train would fit the criteria.  Maximum awards are $2.5 million with a 20% required match.
