Shelby, that's helpful. I thought the Art Gallery was also engulfed, glad I was wrong.

Seems then that the row of stores consists of 2 blgs (confirmed by google's satellite view), and only one of them (the western one) burned down.

So, to get a summary - which stores are destroyed by the fire and which stores may have some smoke and water damage but are recoverable? Is there recoverable property or all needs to be rebuilt? Also, any talk about the cause of the fire - insurance fire or accident?

I got three texts from Notify NYC (which by the way is a great resource and I advise everyone to do the free registration at notifynyc.com) about the 4 alarm fire but to see it was unbelievable.  I hope all are OK and those businesses well insured (especially in this economy).

I do think it's best to avoid the negative speculation and focus on providing relief to those affected.
Think before you speak.  Speak your mind.  Mind your business.  Business before pleasure.
Any questions?

You're right on not dwelling on the negative, I am glad that no one was hurt - it's truly amazing that everyone was able to get out on time and that the fire didn't jump back to the residential building (although i am sure they will have some smoke damage).  I do worry about the business owners and their livelyhood as well as the people they employed.  I know how insurance companies can screw you over so I am hoping everyone will be ok in the long run.  But as someone invested in the neighborhood - it really hurts me to know that these ruins will be sitting there for a long time probably and worse that developers could come in and destroy the look and feel of our homey little town, because that is what it felt like at least to me.

Absolutely horrible.  I think we can tie this thread in with 'Neighborhood Empty Storefronts' 'Cavalier/M & V Bagel Closing' and 'Queens Crap' and really see what a sad turn this neighborhood is taking.

And I know it's purely coincidental, but the flame graphic that indicates this as a hot topic is in poor taste.

I am saddened, and disgusted.

Carrefour, thanks for the photos. The second to last photo really shows the true, complete, utter devastation of that furniture store.  Haven't clicked on the video yet.

It is really sad and must be devastating for those who lost their businesses.  A big thank you to the fire department and the city of NY for their hard work.  JJackflash - your photos, esp #3, really show the intensity of the fire and how much smoke there was.  #3 is especially sad with all the smoke and the ghostly outline of a historic building in the background.
