1924 Aerial City Photos
« on: January 28, 2010, 10:26:36 AM »
Coolest map since Google Maps:

NYC has issued an online map browser that uses aerial photos of the city taken in 1924.

Here's what Jackson Heights looked like in 1924

Here's F. Scott Fitzgerald's "Valley of Ashes" (now Flushing Meadows Corona Park)

It's amazing to see how much of Queens was still farmland and dirt roads even at this time! There's no Triborough (RFK) Bridge yet, no BQE, GCP, or LGA, but all of the rail lines and the elevated #7 train make it easier to figure out the streets that were already paved, and which of the JH landmark buildings were constructed by this time. (It's too bad we couldn't have kept the golf course! LOL)

Thanks for alerting us to this map's existence, toddg!

Great photo, Todd. Was checking out Astoria and JH. And yes so much was farmland. Looking forward to exploring the rest of the city. How did you discover this map?

Really cool.  Kinda scary that two of the buildings I grew up in and lived in (Hawthorne and Greystone) were already up and running.  Or at least built from these photos.  Of course, the building I sit in now (Dunnolly) is still farmland or some sort of grass deal, as are the other two (yes I lived in 5 apartments in my life, all in Jackson Heights).

Thanks for posting this!
