Air purifiers
« on: December 29, 2009, 01:14:09 PM »
Does anyone have advice about air purifiers?  I am thinking of getting one to take some of the dust out of the air.

Thanks.

I'd like to know also.  Do these things actually work well?  My windows face 35th Avenue, and the dust accumulates quicky.  I find that I have to dust every other day... not fun.  When I lived on 71st Street I didn't have that much of a problem, but then the side streets see less traffic from buses, etc.

If you get a good one:  yes.  The Austin Air purifier is what the Red Cross distributed to residents in the downtown Manhattan area after 9/11.   I had two in my 3-story home in Brooklyn during a major (v. dusty) renovation project.  To boot, I was a smoker, fiancee was not.  Cleared up mostly everything, including his bitching.  They're not cheap ($400-$500) nor small (about 24"x24" sq.).  But they do roll on casters and they do work.  They're not quiet when running on high...Filters are about $180, and those should be replaced every 1 - 3 years depending on the kind of air you're cleaning.

We have Sharper Image air purifiers.  They work extremely well and are easy to clean but according to the instructions you are not supposed to use them with the windows open.  I find that I have my windows open so much, that I end up leaving them unplugged most of the time.  Go figure.

We use Blue Air Air Filters. They are great for dust and pollen and allergens.

Beware of air cleaners with ionizers is you have any breathing problems - especially asthma. They increase ozone and cause breathing problems. I think the Sharper Image cleaners are in this category.

Don't particularly want an air purifier but I do like the fact that yours also clears up bitching.  I'll have to look into that!

Too funny.  Maybe that is why my allergies aren't getting any better.  :2funny:  I will have to read up on this.  Had no idea.

I have two.  They work well, but are a bit noisy, since they work by blowing a lot of air.  Think of them as white noise machines, and they're tolerable.

I only use them occasionally.  You're welcome to borrow one to try it out.
