The Go JH! Program has officially launched.  Here's an email from the founder:

Hi Everyone,
After lots of hard work I am excited to announce the new launch of the Go JH! program!  Like the Jackson Heights Film and Food Festival, this program is also sponsored by the local non-profit organization the Community Journal.  

The program is very simple.  Anyone can become a member of the program for $10/year and members receive a Go JH! membership card which entitles them to exclusive discounts at many of our local shops.  

Go to Community Journal to check out the current list of participating merchants and their great and exclusive offers for members of the Community Journal.  The purpose of the program is to support (and explore) the local economy while encouraging and helping our Jackson Heights’ businesses to be more community-oriented.   Currently we have 37 businesses (ethnic restaurants, dance studios, pre-kindergarten schools, cafes, local salons, etc.) participating.

Over time more and more shops will join.  With the card we can all enjoy valuable savings while at the same time supporting and strengthening our neighborhood! The card has the potential of saving you hundreds of dollars a year while supporting local businesses.  The details are at www.communityjournal.org.  

Buy a Card!
It is very easy to buy a card – you can either buy one online at the organization’s website or you can send in an order form which you can download from the same website.  The $10 annual membership helps the Community Journal to offset the costs of this and other neighborhood programs.

Ask Local Shops to Join!
The more businesses that join the program the more successful the initiative will be.  Please share this program with your favorite shops and have them contact me at communityjournal@gmail.com or 718-393-7711 to join the program.

I do hope this has some positive effect on local business, but some of these discounts are kind of lame:

I haven't been to the JH Health Food Store, but I think it is unlikely that a routine purchase there would total $100, which is what you need to spend to get a 5% discount.

I guess if you eat a bagel everyday, M&V's buy 6 get 6 free offer makes sense, but those who eat bagels much less frequently won't find that offer too tempting.

All feed back is welcome!  The goal is to have the best program possible for the community.

I guess what you consider a "lame" or "great" discount is in the eye of the beholder (or card holder in this instance). 

We're very excited over the launch of this program and hope to help the local Jackson Heights economy, to offer savings to customers especially during difficult times and to encourage folks to explore neighborhood shops.

Someone who has meetings, a large family or likes to freeze bagels may be excited over M & V's offer of 6 bagels free with the purchase of six.  They may also like the free coffee at M & V for cardholders.  Someone who shops regularly at the Jackson Heights Health Food Store may love the Go JH! offer.  Some people may love the 10% off at Lety's, Novo, Plaka, Pilatos, Maram, etc. 

As more businesses sign-up the more valuable the Go JH! program will be.  Currently there are 38 businesses participating.  So please let your favorite businesses know about the program so they can sign-up!

okay, some of the individual discounts may be less than overwhelming but i am willing to take a shot for ten bucks to support the community. thanks for making the effort bryan and company!

Wow! This is awesome. I personally think this program is great and pretty innovative (and definitely plan to use the Novo brunch discount!) but it seems to be less about the discounts themselves than about actively supporting local merchants and building a sense of community. I like knowing which businesses support and engage with community efforts and am happy to support them in return - a discount is just an extra plus for me. I mean, it's a $10 card - a few uses and you're whole again - how can you complain? I for one support this community building effort!

This program is definitely something I'll join.  I found a few businesses that my husband and I frequent quite often, so that discount card will come in very handy.  Looking forward to seeing more businesses added over time.  In the meantime, I now have more reason to visit E77 or enjoy some margaritas with friends at El Coyote!   :)

People should know that the way the program works is that each business owner decides the discount for their store.  In my opinion, many of the offered discounts are quite attractive, others not so. 

In my experience business owners are quite receptive to well-intended and constructive suggestions/advice.  If you have an idea on how a business might improve upon their offered discount than I encourage you to kindly offer that suggestion to the shopkeeper. 

The Community Journal is a 100% volunteer-run local non-profit so we don't have the resources to do all the leg work.  So please help as you can and have some patience as the program grows and evolves!

In addition to now launching the Go JH! program (businesses begin accepting the Go JH! card on Monday (11/16) we also organize the Jackson Heights Film and Food Festival (which started in 2006) and the Clean Streets Program (although most wouldn't know it we have additional street cleaners 8 hours a day, Wednesday through Monday from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on 73rd and 74th Streets between 37th Road and 37th Avenue).  I don't mean to change the thread topic so if there are any replies let's please keep it to the Go JH! program.

Some folks who post on this board have been a tremendous help to past and present activities of the Community Journal.  If you would like to volunteer for the Go JH! program (or any of the others) your help would be greatly appreciated!  Feel free to shoot me an e-mail at bpufolkes@yahoo.com.
