Esparks Coffee
« on: January 17, 2008, 04:56:52 PM »
I went this morning to Esparks in neighboring Elmhurst. The coffee was pretty good, in the realm of Starbucks, maybe a tad better. A small cup (venti?) was about 1.85. I didn't try any of the baked goods, but, looked like muffins, bagels and some fruit salads. It was the first day, no one was in there. It seems they didn't have any "grand opening" sign or other hoopla, maybe the reason for lack of customers. The decor also looked very Starbucks life, merchandise, etc. Wonder how well they will do in the next few weeks.

Great news!  It will be nice to have a civilized, indoor oasis next to the playground down there.  And of course, I'm sure the hospital staff will be thrilled.  I think a good coffee shop should do well at this location.

I was over in Woodside this morning and noticed that Esparks has been replaced by another coffee shop called The Coffee Place.  I'm almost sure this was the location of the Esparks.  Also, a few weeks ago, the Esparks by Elmhurst hospital was closed with signs saying they were undergoing renovations.  This place was practically new.  I wonder if they're closing or have closed?

The one in Astoria closed a while ago, which is weird because it was usually pretty busy.  It had an eviction notice on it too!

I guess they were undergoing renovations then.  I'm surprised by renovations, particularly because the place hasn't been around all that long.

When my husband and I passed by on Tuesday they had a yellow health-inspection notice on their door, in addition to their "renovation" signs. If they're back open, maybe they just had to fix some things up to make the health department happy.

The one by the hospital was open and busy this afternoon.  A few people were on laptops -- maybe they have free wireless?

They had to change the name because it looked too much like Starbuck's

Cafe escape

That's the name of the one in Woodside as well.  I mistakenly called it "The Coffee Place" in an earlier post.

The sign on the Broadway one still says Esparks as of today.  Are they in the process of changing all of them?  Did they get sued by Starbucks?

O.K.  I was a bit confused here.  I guess the one in Woodside is Cafe Escape and the one on Broadway is still Esparks.
