Sun-Dried Tomatoes in bulk?
« on: October 01, 2009, 03:19:14 PM »
Does anyone know where I can find sun-dried tomatoes in bulk?  In other places (not NYC), they typically have been in the produce section of large supermarkets and are sold by the pound.  I like to only buy a few for a meal so it's not that expensive, and they're always fresh.

I'm not sure - but there is a place on the south side of Queens Blvd in Rego Park near the 63rd Dr. stop that had tons of bulk items like nuts and fruit.  Maybe someone else knows the name of it.

Besides that, I have found the sundried tomatoes that Berry Fresh Farms in Astoria stocks in the produce section (not bulk; they are packaged into those hard plastic deli containers) to be very fresh.  Hence the name of the store, I guess.  ;)

Not bulk, but you can get them in fairly small packages in the produce dept.  at Met Foods, 37th Ave. Dried, not in oil. C-town also has them, but higher price.

Met seems to have better quality supermarket produce. I'd go there.

Wauldbaums had a huge container but they were pricey. I got some yesterday at the mets for under two dollars

I like to cut up sun-dried tomatoes and saute in olive oil and garlic.  Then I mix with brown rice, couscous, or quinoa.  I usually add parmesan cheese, and depending on what I have on hand--feta cheese, spinach, vegetarian "chicken" strips, sunflower seeds, etc.

I'm not much of a cook, and don't have the patience for anything that takes longer than 10 minutes or requires multiple pots or too much chopping... and this is very quick and easy and FAST.  Couscous and quinoa only take about 10 minutes to cook as well.

If you're a FreshDirect customer, they carry sundried tomatoes (in a plastic resealable container, not packed in oil) as well.

Mine is:
sundried tomatoes, black olives, parsley, garlic -- all chopped, plus olive oil.  All together in one bowl and served either hot or cold over pasta.  Sounds simple but tastes great!
