A full run-down to the planned changes to parking are available here:
http://a841-tfpweb.nyc.gov/jackson-heights/recommendations-changes-to-parking/

Parking spaces are being eliminated near a number of intersections to create turn-lanes so that north-south traffic flows more safely and smoothly.  Some blocks are being converted from regular parking meters to Muni meters, which will provide a slight increase in parking capacity.  A new batch of unmetered parking spaces is also being created over on 69th Street.

I saw this morning that the intersection of 73rd St and Broadway has become a right-turn ONLY as part of the traffic calming presented earlier this year, and that 37th road has been closed to traffic in front of the old Eagle theater - the beginning of a pedestrian zone.

I hope my dream of a bench in the area will finally come true.

i love bike lanes, and i really appreciate the expansion of the idea, but bike lanes on 75th are totally impractical, and borderline impossible. there's one lane of traffic on either side of the median now, and if the idea is to remove the median, well, i will chain myself to our penguin!

Never fear, dssjh.  Wink is safe.  74th Street and 75th Street are not getting bike lanes.  They are being marked with "sharrows" to indicate that they are bike routes, and that motorists and cyclists must share the lane.

Woah, I didn't know the penguin had a name! Anyway, glad he's safe.

You can check current construction status (and review the upcoming changes - see the Recommendations section) on the DOT's site here: http://a841-tfpweb.nyc.gov/jackson-heights/

Oh, yes.  Wink is quite famous.  When he disappeared a few years ago, his cousin Tux (mascot of Linux) started a campaign to bring him back.  Thankfully the Parks Department rescued him and returned him home.

Maple, I sympathize. I am on 77th Street, too, and although the DOT claims the massive increase in honking had nothing to do with 75th Street (although the massive increase started the same day as the switch and has not ended), it is really bad right now.

I posted another post (independent of this one) giving the number to call to complain. The timing on the green light on 77th needs to be increased, at the very least.

That way the homeless won't have to sleep on the sidewalk like they do now. You must not use this subway station in the morning.

RE: new pedestrian mall - 37th Rd. from Broadway to 74th St.

I never actually see anyone using the street as intended. Everyone continues to crowd the sidewalk, especially the north side. Most people seem to treat the street closure as if it is a construction zone and avoid it.
I also channel Gladys Gilbert!

Beech Court has a point. Something about those orange barrels says to me "a backhoe is about to come down this street and mow you down at any moment." I hadn't actually realized I was supposed to walk in the middle of the street.

agreed with both of you:

hoping they can put up something more permanent looking -- even something as simple as two or three waist high concrete pillars, wide enough to keep cars from going through. that can't be so pricey, can it?

I think they are still in the process of installing it. Everynow and then there are trucks out there painting etc. We should all have a little patience with the new changes. As we all know the city doesn't move swiftly in these things.

The city often starts with something basic to begin with, and works its way up to better, more permanent designs.

E.g. the Times Square pedestrian plazas, Feb. 2010:
