To celebrate Diwali, the library will host an afternoon of music, dance, crafts, and sitar playing from India. Subhra Goswami will lead a hands-on workshop and discuss the cultural and historical background of Alpona and Rangoli, a special type of floor and wall decoration using dry powder in natural colors from grains and vegetables. Artists from the Ranjanee Indian Music, Dance, and Art Institute will perform different forms of Odissi, Kathak, and Bharnatyam dances accompanied by live music. Indrajit Roy-Chowdhury will play the sitar at 3.30pm in the lower level Auditorium. A graduate of Duke University with a prestigious Bennenson Award, Roy-Chowdhury's concerts have been televised by Indian National Television. Call the library at 718-899-2500 for more details.
