First Sundays for Families at Queens Museum of Art

The Queens Museum has a special program for families on the first Sunday of each month, including January 6, 2008.

These programs are designed to engage families of all ages in an exciting roster of creative programs that include dance, gallery tours, music and art making. Activities and programs are inspired by the museum's permanent and changing exhibitions and are offered to the public free of charge, along with free admission to the museum. Free trolley service to and from the Willets Point/Shea Stadium subway station is available every 15 minutes from 12 - 5 pm.

Animation Workshop - Led by Magic Box Productions, participants will see examples of animation projects and discuss the history and science of animation. They will then create a handheld optical toy such as a thaumatrope, which creates the illusion of motion with still images. Families will utilize this toy to tell their own New York stories as inspired by the images in the New York States of Mind exhibition. Three 75 minute sessions will be held at 1, 2 and 3 pm.

Salsa Performance and Lecture - Jose Obando, Salsa Consultant from the Musical Instruments Department at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, will present "Cuatrismo" a salsa performance and lecture. "Cuatrismo" is a genre that celebrates Puerto Rican folkloric music including the bomba, plena and salsa traditions. Obando's program traces the 15th-century evolution of the cuatro–one of the national string instruments of Puerto Rico–from its roots in Moorish Spain through its contemporary influence in "Nuyorican" salsa. From 2 - 3:30 pm.
