Online shopping for home furnishings
« on: June 21, 2009, 08:20:36 PM »
I've been looking to purchase a small rug, approximately 2' x 5' to place at the base of the steps in a sunken living room.  Anyone have any suggestions for an online store that may have something nice for a living room?  I tried IKEA, but didn't see anything I liked.  Thanks.

I bought a couple of nice Persian rugs from a rug dealer who is on the Upper East Side and advertises on craigslist.  So if you are looking for Persian, go to the furniture section of craigslist and type in Persian UES in the search box (don't use quotes).  http://newyork.craigslist.org/search/fua?query=persian+ues&minAsk=min&maxAsk=max

The other place I looked at online was http://www.rugman.com/ but I found the prices for Persians were at least double the prices that the UES dealer was asking.

Other major stores like Ikea that have rugs that you could probably look at online are West Elm, Crate and Barrel, and Pottery Barn.

Unfortunately, my little dog and Persian rugs simply won't mix.  She's never had an accident, but I wouldn't want to invest too much money to later have to deal with possible stains.   :'(

HomeDecorators.com is excellent.  I have been furnishing my new co-op from scratch & somewhat on a budget, & HomeDecorators (owned by Home Depot) has a vast selection of quality furnishings at reasonable prices.  Moreover, their customer service is excellent.  Items come pretty quickly usually by Fed Ex (MUCH better than UPS), and if anything has even minor damage, they will almost automatically give you a significant discount on future purchases, if you choose (of course, you can return or get a replacement).  Many of their rugs come from a large importer on Long Island & are delivered within a week.

Anyone ever been to the ABC Carpet & Home outlet in the Bronx?  I took a drive there recently and actually got lost in the place while looking for rugs.  The selection is so large I didn't even know where to begin.  I'm wondering how the outlet compares to the other retail locations.

I had very good luck buying "semi-antique" Persian rugs on eBay - all clean, in good condition, and were shipped very quickly.
I bought two huge (10x13) rugs and two long (5x10) rugs, for under $800 combined.

I bought from http://shop.ebay.com/ecgeurope/m.html and http://shop.ebay.com/www.ecarpetgallery.com/m.html

For smaller rugs, prices go as low as 25-40 bucks.

We love Persian rugs, and we have animals - so for us - the solution was to get Persian rugs that were nice, but not so nice that we'd cry when the inevitable happens to one of them. PS - so far, the cats love to sharpen their claws on one of the runners, but it's so thick and well-made that it's handling the abuse far better than the cheap Target Store Brand rug we used to have, where we always had to vacuum up pile every few days.

I second all of the above, and add worldmarket.com. Good luck.

I went to ABC in the Bronx last weekend and couldn't find a single thing that I liked that was affordable. We ended up buying something from Overstock, but now I wish I had read your post earlier Marcus...

i'd read about the 'deep discounts' available at abc for ages and went up a couple of years ago to check out for myself....yeah, percentage discounts were huge. but they still translated into 2000-2500 for a rug, 100 dollars for a throw pillow. a little rich for my blood.

i've had mixed, mostly positive results with overstock. a great recliner for 200 bucks, a lovely side table for 79. a couple other things were a bit iffy. but nothing outright disastrous.

chuckster, i think the ABC warehouse in the bronx is totally worth it if you are not looking for something very specific. i found their selection to be varied and frankly overwhelming. but i wasn't looking for any particular design and walked away with a few good finds, not in the rug department, however.

overstock.com is by far the best place I know to buy rugs.  They have a huge selection, great quality, great prices and the shipping costs can't be beat ($2.95 and it will arrive in about 3 days).

You'd be surprised how many high-end designers (including my best friend who works out in the Hamptons) buy rugs from there.  I have 5 rugs, all from overstock, and I am thrilled with all of them. I get compliments all the time.

Their furniture is mostly crap, lighting is hit or miss (lots of tacky lamps but a few gems if you search well), and the rugs are outstanding.  I usually shop at much pricier places, but they will always get my business for rugs.

I'll have to check out overstock.com.
I've purchased many rugs at abc in the Bronx and been pretty happy - plus you can negotiate with them on price and padding.
Did not know that home decorators was owned by Home Depot.

If you like modern, then you might like some of the rugs at the site below...they are reasonably priced and fairly good quality.  You can usually find some online coupons too (I got 20% off on a few 8x10 rugs last year):
