I heard awhile back that the bakery on the corner of 37th and 85th? was applying to get an outside seating cafe  liscence. The process takes at least four months, and this was about 6 months ago. The rules and regulations are daunting, and about ten pages long. The requirements are quite stringent, and i dont think most restaurants on 37th ave would qualify. The sidewalks are cleary wide enough to meet approval, and im sure 37th ave is zoned for it, but thats the least of it. I think the cost involved prohibits alot of these places from serving food outside. Rent has to be paid to the city, and extra insurance needs to be had for each seat. i dont think their can be outside seating on the side streets, because they are zoned residential. Also, i dont think most of the existing restaurants are wide enough to meet standards. I think most restaurants that have outdoor seating on city/public property, existed before the Zoning laws were changed in 1980. Its much more difficult to put tables and chairs outside these days >:(

La Nueva, and yeah it got its outdoor cafe application approved a couple of months ago. Now they just need to put the tables and chairs there, I don't know why they're delaying that!

Oh!  I was a bit confused about this.  Originally, I thought the permit was for La Nueva to be able to add glass doors that may be opened during warm weather months...something similar to what Mehfil has now on 37th Ave.  Adding tables and chairs outdoors will be even nicer!  Hopefully, they'll move on it so we can enjoy this summer season.

Great thread!

My wife and I are also Williamsburg exiles, we've been here about 6 months, so far we are loving the switch.

Cool (in no particular order):
- Canelle Patisserie
- Outdoor landscaping with perennials, flowering trees, bulbs
- Travers Park / Farmer's Market
- E/F/7/R/V and yes, G (I use it a lot to get back to W'burg E to G at Court Sq / 23-Ely Ave)
- FOOD markets, restaurants
- Architecture (WBurg is butt-ugly, let's face it)
- Indoor parking in my coop (a nice feature of our otherwise mediocre building)
- Queens Hall of Science / Flushing Meadows Park
- Good schools
- Cultural diversity that doesn't take place only on the shared borders of otherwise segregated 'ghettos' (like in W'burg)

Suck:
- DOG POOP on the sidewalk (so nasty)
- longish walk from train to 34th ave
- few / no live music venues
- Spuyten Duyvil WB, ???? JH
- Friends who think Queens is end of the world
- kid friendly brunch spots?
- no green space in the neighborhood
- no record stores (sorry iTunes is no replacement!!)
- I can't buy the 'mansion' on 34th / 75th
- Hiram Monserrate

I had to think about the 'suck' list a lot longer!

mr harmonic, do you know about terraza cafe? they have some cool bands playing there (many times jazz), yet it's not a venue that would have artists on the radio play there.

And I do miss it, but we used to have a nice little HMV on 82nd that closed down about a year ago.

The way things are going in the record biz, (Tower, Virgin, etc.) I suspect many neighborhoods are/will be lacking 'record' stores.

I don't have a full '10' compiled yet for either side, but the Pros far outweigh the cons here in this neighborhood.

Decent Pub, Record Store, Sidewalk Cafes and less Street Congestion are on my wish list.

I haven't been in in a long time But Numbers Records and Tapes on 37th Ave Between 78th and 77th Streets is a record store. Not sure how good bad or indifferent as iTunes has served my needs, but it's worth a look in.

When outsiders move into a neighborhood that is already well established and affordable for the ethnic groups that call it home and have called it home for generations..
When these outsiders bitch about the lack of yoga studios, bars with ambiance, and coffee shops...
When these outsiders compare the neighborhood to the previous neighborhood they left (i.e. williamsburg) because it was already too overrun with their tribe...
When they complain that the families that they now live among are irritated by their acoustic guitar playing and cigarette smoking in front of the building...
When the newcomers who are raising rents to twice the rate they currently are for working families...
When the newcomers feel so hip and "adventurous" for living amongst the "ethnic" groups and being able to eat their exotic foods..

We know are in the midst of gentrification but the fact that so many of you are not even hiding your colonization of this neighborhood is even more frightening.

Don't you understand that when you demand the cultural elements of your previous neighborhood you are killing the very "diversity" that you are now touting as some badge of your hipness??...At this rate..in a few years jh will be williamsburg.

Please read the post "10 cool & 10 suck things of JH 11372" to see such blatant ethnocentric racist and classist comments such as the following: Cool about jh: "The Latinos"
              Suck about jh: "No solar panels," "Lack of European (re:yuppie) flared bar or bistro"

Whoa there!

I see you've been a member of this board for a while, but have rarely spoken up to let us know what you think.  Surely you know by know that there are a lot of people here with a lot of different perspectives.  If you want people to take your views seriously, a drive-by flaming isn't the best strategy.  Your judgments are painted with too broad a brush and seem aimed at provoking a fight rather than a conversation.

Marntamb, you posted an ad for your babysitting/tutoring services...wouldn't the people who could afford such a luxury be the very gentrifiers you decry!?  Are you part of the problem  ;) ?

Actually I am a person of color who is extremely offended by these posts but thank you for ignoring the content of what I was saying. We are in the midst of gentrification here that will eventually push the families here out. It is a process that has run people of color out of their neighborhoods all over this city and I just wish there was some acknowledgement of what williamsburg expats moving here and wanting yoga studios actually means. Thank you for pointing out that I am a graduate student who needs to find ways to make ends meet. Now I can no longer keep that post here.

Thanks for the free tutoring lesson and psychology advice.  I have learned a lot about myself and the world around me through your posts.  There are some things I hope you will clarify for me though.
 
I am sorry to learn that my enjoyment of wine and cheese offends you.  I understand some cheese is stinky, but offensive? Really? 
I am upset to discover that despite being born in Flushing, someone on the internet says that I am an outsider in Queens.  I do enjoy the outdoors, could that be it?
I am also confused about one last thing:  If I get solar panels, how should I categorize myself:
Ethnocentric
Racist
Classist
All of the above

Wow. You really don't get it? I am attacking the perspective that this place needs to be changed to suit you. Making this a place with stinky cheese spots and yoga studios will change the very nature of jackson heights.  Furthermore, you see nothing wrong with people saying that "The Latinos" are a really "cool" thing about jackson heights? You are more offended by my speaking out about this?
I am from an immigrant family and these areas where we can connect with our culture are rare and important. I just wish there was a little more acknowledgement about the impact of you thinking our communities are cool and exotic and yet wanting to change them.

well, I think Jackson Heights is always changing. Is it better to change ethnically rather than gentrificationally(??) ?
It seems that lots of cultures, Indians, Latinos, Thai and other Asians are coming in here and changing it to suit them. How much different was the neighborhood 10,20,30 years ago? Have you seen the changes, or did you move here because of the current climate expecting it to remain the same through your lifetime? That's what I like about the neighborhood. A yoga studio or wine and cheese shop will only make the area more diverse.
