Fiesta Mexicana

When Fiesta Mexicana first opened several years ago, it was a truly fantastic restaurant.  But after a year or so, the quality declined, and I stopped going.  Today, New York Magazine reports that the original chef is back in Queens, opening a new place in Astoria:

The Fiesta Mexicana in JH on 75th and Roosevelt never re-opened.  Are they ever planning to re-open or are there any plans for that space?  Seems like it would be a great location for business.

I just walked by the closed Fiesta Mexicana on 75th & Roosevelt and it appears some activity is taking place.  The paper on the windows has been taken down and the place is being cleaned but no renovations (yet).

The old Fiesta Mexicana sign is back up, so I guess they'll be back.

I really loved this place when it was new, and depite their long and sad decline, I'll definitely give it another try when they reopen.  Hopefully they'll have a successful second run.

I really loved their pork chops and posole, so I'll be back to see if it's as good as I remember!  :smitten: 
Who's going to do the cooking if the cook is now in Astoria?  And will they get a liquor license?  Enquiring minds want to know...

Fiesta Mexicana is open for business.  I walked by yesterday and noticed 4 people have lunch.  No Menu posted.  Also, Tanqueria Coatzingo (76th St) is still closed.  I wonder if it will ever reopen.  I'm also looking forward to the NEW Mexican Restaurant on Northern Blvd & 81st St to open.

Just went to their new buffet this weekend and it was excellent!  I tried a sampling of everything and only one dish was just ok (chicken with peppers).  They also have a soft taco station where they make the taco in front of you from scratch.  I loved it!  (Both the station and the resulting taco)  If you haven't already, you should give the buffet a try- it's available on weekends only and a live mariachi band provides the musical ambiance.  The buffet price is on par with the Indian buffets in the nabe.

Thanks for posting this judibean.  What was your impression of how business was on a weekend?  Was there a good amount of turnover?  I'm anxious to try this place.

Several tables were occupied and in fact, the place looked more packed than I've ever seen it.  A good sign since I've been worried about it ever since it re-opened.  I came at the tail end of lunchtime, so I came into a crowded restaurant to see it empty out towards the end, so couldn't speak much to the turnover.  At one point, the mariachi band went to play outside and I saw a few people trickle in.  They're drumming up business!  One other thing, I think the buffet is a really good value because it offers a couple of seafood selections and all the soft tacos you can devour!  I will post a more detailed Yelp review later, maybe tonight.

no doh stickers this time....and the 14 month break last time was not purely doh, since most places get up and running again within 72 hours.
