Does Starbucks Have Internet Access?
« on: March 22, 2009, 08:26:46 AM »
I just moved into JH yesterday & my place does not have Internet access set up yet.  I need to input/calculate grades on my on-line grading program tonight - I'm a teacher.  Does the Starbucks have wireless service for it's customers?  If so, does anyone know how late they are open on Sunday's?  Thanks.

Welcome to the neighborhood!

Somebody else should correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think Starbucks offers wireless access.
Since the situation is constantly changing, it's hard to know which places offer wireless.  But in the recent past, it was available at Espresso 77 (near 77th & 37th), Mystic Planet (Northern near 84th), and Deshi Biryani (75-18 37th Ave).

There are also many Internet Cafes, including White Camel, and Lotto 777 (near 75th & 37th).

I hope this helps.

I believe Starbucks does indeed have wireless access. But I think it may come at a price.

Last I checked I believe E77 had it too, and I don't think they charged for it.

If that doesn't work, I believe you can find internet access at the library.

When my internet has gone out, I've gone to kinkos, where you pay by the minute.  If you have to spend more than 5 minutes, though, that may get too expensive and will not be the best option.

The library doesn't work because I need "after hours."  I happen to be a Kinko's "fan" - where is it in JH & do you know if it is open late night like the ones in Manhattan (that's why I find Kinko's is helpful "in a pinch")?

I'm not sure about in JH.  I always go to the one in Astoria, on Steinway Street & Broadway.  I drive there.

thomasg,

When I was in-between internet providers I used to take my laptop to the Diversity Center on 35th ave. bt. 76 and 77 Sts. In the past they'd mention their free wireless when they were advertising the opening. I haven't been there in a while but the place has potential to be more of a community gathering place beyond housing a small group of local activists.

I used to feel guilty about video chatting for fun while a few feet away concerned people were organizing a Iraq war protest in the same room.

You can also go to Expresso 77.

Esparks, the Starbucks knock-off, has fliers in the window that say both "free wifi" and "open 24 hours," however, I don't know if either one is true.  A  yelp review from Jan. 2009 said that they hadn't gotten their free wifi yet.  When I  walked by recently, I saw several people inside using laptops, but there was no way to tell if they were online or offline.

Location is 82nd and Broadway in Elmhurst, about a 5 minute walk from the 82nd St. stop on the 7.

I know Terraza Cafe has computers with internet access and I believe they are free to use.  40-19 Gleane Street (off of Roosevelt and 83rd)

ANSWER:

Yes, Starbucks does have internet access

HOWEVER:

You must by a card and put money on it of a MINIMUM $5.00
You must use the card at least once per month
You must reload the card so it has money on it
ALSO:
You can only use access at only ONE starbucks 2-hours per day
If you log in for 2 minutes to check email, TOUGH LUCK!!!!!!!!! your 2 hours for that day is DONE!

HEAVEN:

Go to E77  on 77th off of 34th
Great coffee
nice people
EXCELLENT GOODS
...........................you buy  something and sit and its free.

Just don't sit in there like you are trying to fight for civil rights, just do what you got to do and go.

There are internet cafes in the 'hood where you can pay for the use of the internet service.  I'm still somewhat uncomfortable with the small mom and pop establishments where people have chosen to go in, sit for a long while and use their personal lap top.  These establishments have to meet their monthly budget and make a profit.  And as we complain of empty storefronts and finally the disappearance of the "money laundering" storefronts, I believe we, as a community, should be considerate of those that manage to keep their storefronts open, welcome our families and try and make a living.  So for those that want a place to go and use the internet, again there are internet cafes in the 'hood.  The charge per hour is $3 and for 12 hours it is $15.  :smiley6600:

Perhaps you mis understood me when I said, "Just don't sit their for so long like you are fighting for civil rights".

I do not think it is necessary to PAY for internet access when you can get it for free anywhere.

I would never go to any cafe that charged me for a wireless connection when I am buying their food and eating it there.

I am just saying that it is not polite to "linger" there as if no one else wants to sit down.

While we are at it, its not polite to sit down without permission when someone else is sitting there, yet people still do it as if we live in some 3rd world country.

You can also get wireless access at rice ave. When the weather is nice, I've been known to sit outside places late at night and use their wireless... it still works outside the doors, you know...

Cafescape in Woodside has free wi-fi with a purchase, but just don't try to send your drink back for being too sweet.

Rajbhog at 37th Ave and 73rd St advertises free wi-fi.  I'm sure they wouldn't mind if you sat there for awhile on a weekday, as they are not really that busy before people get off work.  They may not have coffee, but have tea and Indian snacks and sweets.
