Anyone try the new seafood store on Northern, around 83rd I think?  Called Red Lobster: I wonder if that's a copyright infringement!  I haven't been in yet, but my husband stopped by and said that some stuff looked good/some not so much - but got some nice shellfish there for New Year's Eve.  We even ate the oysters raw and no one got sick . . . I'm pretty sure the oysters were from there - I know he also got some stuff at the seafood counter in Super Compare (what used to be Popular on Northern but is about 200 times better).  The seafood counter inside Super Compare also seems to have pretty varied quality, but at least with these options, there's some possibility of getting fish without trekking to Corona or Astoria!

I just finished reading through this thread, and the associated chowhound threads, about markets in JH.  But am still wondering...do any places in the neighborhood stock a lot of Mexican specialties?

I just got a new Mexican cookbook, and a lot of the recipes have multiple kinds of chilies, a specific kind of chocolate, etc.  The basic mole has three different types of fresh chilies. I vaguely remember seeing a shop advertising specifically Mexican stuff on Roosevelt Ave in the 80's, but didn't go in and I didn't see any produce through the window.   Some of these can probably be had at Trade Fair or Met, but any other ideas?

There is another small Mexican products store on 37th Ave around 90th St. on the north side.  I can't remember the exact block; perhaps it's in the high 80s.  As far as I remember, they have a few fresh things like tomatillos but I think most of the products are packaged and canned.

Also I passed a much larger store in Woodside that from the sidewalk looks like a normal (bigger) fresh fruit/vegetables/flowers marketplace but a large sign outside said "full line of Mexican products."  It's on 63rd and Roosevelt on the Elmhurst side, open 24 hours.

    I love the Food Bazaar on Junction and 34th Ave.  The produce section is incredible and the butcher has a wonderful selection of pork and sausages.  I am amazed at the selection of food items here.  Give it a try you will not be disappointed.

Contessa:  Are you familiar with Casa Rivera at 40-15 82nd Street?  I just discovered this incredible store a few weeks ago and I have been a regular.  Its a very busy store with a section for seafood, meats, grocery and deli.  In the back of the store is a restaurant with seating (no table service).  Two soups each day plus 3 entrees.  I take the food home for dinner.  Very reasonable prices.  Casa Rivera specializes in Columbian, Peruvian & Mexican.

    Thanks for the tip Mike V I don't get over to that side of the tracks too often but I will definitely make a trip this week.  I've giving up cooking professionally but continue to cook for the ones I love and having a grocery store which carries a variety of international spices, produce and meats is a must.  What type of prepared foods do they have?

Types of prepared foods:   Soups = Lentil, Green Plantain, Chicken Soup, Vegetable Soup, Hen Soup, Tripe, Ribs Soup. 
Entrees:  Pepper Steak, Beef Tripe Stew, Mondongo Guisado, Beef Stew, Beef Ribs Stew, Oxtail Stew, Arroz Con Pollo, Paella, Grillled Pork Chops, Breaded Chicken Breast, Onion Steak, Pernil, Muchacho Relleno, Salted Chicken Breast.  Open 7 days a week.  They have a Menu which list what is available each day.  Example:  Sunday = Arroz con Pollo & Paella.  Today (Tuesday) = Beef tripe stew & Grilled Pork Chops.  Price range from $5.50 to $7.50 (Paella).  I ordered the Paella on Sunday and it was enough for two meals.

Thanks for this suggestion.  I walked over there tonight and it's a relief to have wider aisles and to be able to move around the store.  The fish and meat sections did look nice; they had some good looking salmon filets for $6.99 a pound.  Boneless chicken breasts were $2.99 a pound. 

I did enjoy shopping there in general- it had a nice atmosphere, at least at the hour I was there (8pm).  The lines were not long at all --many cashier stations operating--yet there were enough shoppers in the store to let me know there's probably pretty good turnover on the shelves.

There were some interesting products there like several varieties of bottled chimichurri and a few different kinds of frozen large-kernel corn and some frozen fruits I didn't recognize.
