I believe the real reason that OPEN STREETS exists is that the vast majority of folks love it.

We are so fortunate in Jackson Heights. Hooray.

It seems that loving Open Streets has a lot to do with if you live on vs. near 34th Ave. Most of the on the ave residents are less than thrilled at the 12hr a day, seven days a week closures. Intervention is needed here! Please electeds, those new and seasoned, can you relieve some of the stresses this causes for those that have legit reasons to want their access back for some of the time here?
Not everyone loves this situation. Not by a long stretch.

The greatest factor in whether one is an open street/ linear park supporter is how someone feels about who gets to use and have access to public space.  If you think that cars, by default, have the right to an enormous amount of public space, then it's likely you will not support the OS.  If you think that public space can and should be used for things other than car transportation and car storage, then you will likely support and enjoy the OS.  I live right on 34th and I think the OS is the greatest.  The most vehement anti-OS person lives almost two blocks from the OS and has driveway.  The fact is that there are about 40 people who hate it and are very vocal about it.  The OS is demonstrably popular and is heavily used by wide swaths of the community.  Clearly there are people who hate it, but it's also pretty clear that an enormous amount of people like and use it.

Ever since the battle between Robert Moses and Jane Jacobs in the early 1960's...(and the wrecking of the Bronx where Robert Moses prioritized cars and expressways in the 1950's)...New York is famously a town where people are more important than cars. It's part of our DNA as New Yorkers after our difficult history concerning this issue.

New York led the world in this...

Hooray for Pedestrian Power.

Hooray for the Open Street!

MY pals who live on 34th Ave are fed up with the noise and inconvenience of Open Streets. His 80 year old parents who live in the neighborhood aren't fond of dragging metal gates back and forth especially with winter weather coming. During the summer there were outdoor concerts on Open Streets, exercise classes, improvised ball games, and the constant dragging back and forth of metal gates, which isn't exactly pleasant for his daughter's bedroom which faces the Avenue. For people who love to throw around the "Randian selfishness" accusals, the narrow-minded and unenlightened self-interest running rampant in this thread is coming directly from the OS crowd. I'm glad YOUR friends love Open Streets, but perhaps living outside one's own little fantasy world is what makes New York New York, for me at least. Talk about solipsism!

The paradox of being human is that folks don't see their own solipsism. Which is exactly equal to others.

Wow, Well-said ChickenringNYC.  I appreciate your insights on this issue, spot on with these remarks!

Is that your way of saying "it takes one to know one?" Well I respectfully disagree. I want Everyone, and I truly mean EVERYone, to use 34th. Cars and motor vehicles in the single-lane street, bicycles in the bike lane, pedestrians on the ample sidewalk. YOU all want to more or less eliminate two of those three groups and make it regulated to do anything except walk, dance, exercise and play sports on the asphalt of a Jackson Heights Avenue. So, who's being selfish?

The DOT solution to this OPEN STREET  includes all people and even cars using it. So I am perplexed as to what you are referring to.

As is often the case, "self righteous indignation" runs rampant on these pages. Apologies, on the other hand, are as rare as diamonds.

Hooray for the Open Street!
Anyone else notice the irony here? Close the street to traffic and label the program "Open Streets"?
I guess posting "Hooray for the Closed Street" wouldn't sound as progressive.
Newspeak isn't unique to Orwell, I guess

Anyone notice the irony that the DOT proposal allows the street to be open to all?
Just differently?

HOORAY FOR THE BOTH CLOSED AND OPEN STREET!

I guess a solution that is both closed and open, which is what DOT has proposed... is confusing for folks who can only see OPEN or CLOSED. But not a mix of the two...which is what is on the table.

HOORAY FOR THE DOT PROPOSAL!

Better?

It's an ok compromise. No matter whether folks want to see it in a totally polarized OPEN/CLOSED way or not.

soooo orwellian to make a publicly owned space where people can live in public rather than giving it over to already-subsidized-by-us-all,  privately-owned, polluting, noisy, unsafely driven cars.

ooo what a dystopia. how awful.

It wasn't "given" to evil vehicles, it was taken by self-appointed ambassadors for some kind of urban fantasy which has run its course. As far as invoking authors, the Closed Street Brigade began it with the Ayn Rand bull. Whereas a comparison to Orwellian double-speak is entirely appropriate. Hooray for misplaced literary references!
