RE: SAFETY IN GENERAL ON 34TH AVE OPEN STREETS...
What is the speed limit for bicycles and other motorized bikes, mopeds, etc. that ride along 34th Avenue? The barricades I've seen on some blocks state "5 miles per hour" but this is clearly not enforced.
So is it just the default 25 mph speed limit for whole of city for bikes on 34th Avenue while pedestrians concurrently use the same space?
I have observed accidents between bikes and pedestrians on 34th Ave and worry there may be more. Don't we normally have roads for cars and other vehicles, clearly separated from sidewalks for pedestrians? I think this issue has been overlooked in the planning.
The speed limit is officially 5 mph, and yeah, it isn't enforced. It should probably be higher, but not 25 mph. I have seen people on essentially motorcycles going way too fast, also, and I wish cops would do something about it.
However, if you are worried about pedestrians and cyclists, you should be reassured by the fact that injuries to both have dramatically decreased (by 40% and 20%, respectively) in Open Streets, despite seeing so much more use. Statistically, 34th Ave has never been safer. Cars were the main danger all along!
